Ryan Boldt Joins International Genetics Solutions As Lead Geneticist

Boldt currently works as director of breed improvement for the Red Angus Association of America (RAAA), and will balance both roles for the next eight months as he transitions to the full-time position with IGS. Boldt has been an active participant in educating the RAAA membership about genetics, EPD, and breeding programs. He has written numerous magazine articles and given many in-person presentations all across the US.

ASA CEO Dr. Wade Shafer shared, “We greatly appreciate Dr. Culbertson’s contribution as IGS’s Lead Geneticist for the last two years. She certainly embodies the IGS vision and has advanced our position in the industry. We wish Randie well and plan to continue to work with her while in her new position at Iowa State. She is turning the position over to someone who is eminently qualified to fill the role — Ryan Boldt.  Given the fact that Ryan has worked with IGS during his entire tenure (over four years) at RAAA, he is sure to hit the ground running. We have had our eye on Ryan since even before his tenure at RAAA. It has been a privilege to have had a front seat in watching the development of this young geneticist over the last four years — a view that only solidified our interest in him. We have no doubt that he will be a valuable contributor to the IGS mission. I sincerely thank and commend RAAA for their willingness to selflessly support and encourage Ryan to join the IGS team in the Lead Geneticist role.  It confirms their belief in the IGS vision and, consequently, their commitment to the beef industry. We truly value the RAAA/ASA partnership.”

American Simmental Association Signs On With The Genetic Merit Pricing Task Force

The GMP has the capacity to strengthen the position of serious producers who intentionally build profit-oriented genetics for the cow-calf operator, cattle feeders, and packers alike. At the same time, this approach offers greater awareness of the current beef population and gives all parties the opportunity to make future-minded decisions with forethought, facts, and tangible understanding of actual profit potential.

The ASA Board of Trustees passed a resolution to become a full funding partner in the GMP, contributing $40,000. The American Simmental-Simbrah Foundation will contribute half of these funds.

Since its inception, the ASA has supported many efforts focused on elevating the value of genetic merit in US beef cattle. Tools such as the IGS Feeder Profit Calculator ™ make clear ASA’s commitment to serving the industry at large. ASA has full respect for the presently existing approaches that are proving successful and recognizes that many systems already encourage and reward genetic merit. The ASA’s interest and involvement focuses solely on multi-breed objective measures of terminal traits and their potential implementation, where appropriate, across the beef business. Also in line with ASA’s mission, scientific assessment will be at the forefront of these efforts.

DNA Important Announcement

Members must ship DNA samples to Neogen within 6 weeks of receiving paperwork or DNA kits from the ASA DNA Department. If samples have not been shipped and received for testing within that allotted time, the lab will cancel the order and the ASA DNA Team must be notified and a new order created before samples are shipped.

Digital Certificates - A New Feature Launched by ASA
ASA recently launched a new feature on Herdbook allowing members to download digital certificates for registered animals. Digital certificates are the easiest, most reliable way to obtain a copy of the registration certificate quickly. At the time of download, they include the most up-to-date EPD and pedigree information. The official record is the Herdbook Services record.

After September 1, 2022, ASA will no longer scan and email or fax copies of printed certificates. Printing digital certificates will replace scanned, emailed, or faxed copies of certificates. If you are the current owner of record, these can be printed directly from herdbook.org without contacting the ASA office. Continue reading.
