Dear Friends,

Our sorrow and prayers for all who have spent the last week recovering from the lost trees and lost power after the storms that did such shocking damage to our region. Please let us know through the office if you or a neighbor are still affected or need support in any way that we can give.

And after such rich rejoicing and reflection for the 4th of July weekend we move into next phase of our repair and renew themes. Dr. Drew Hermeling will present our next 250th brunch lecture which is again at capacity. His presentation on how much Native American and Dutch Colonial government encounters can teach us about what went wrong and how we can learn from the past to repair relationships with peoples, histories and the cultural diversity around us. It will be recorded and available for all who missed the sign-up window.

On Sunday morning in services we mark Fr. Glenn’s 40th anniversary as a priest (and share our cards and some chocolate cake and coffee between services with Carol and Glenn and their friends) as we consider how much of our deepest work takes decades to unfold, from raising children, to growing churches and businesses to establishing healthy communities, schools and government.

On Sunday the 19th from 3-4pm is an extraordinary opportunity to encounter remarkable music, musicians and community as we launch a Celebrate Abilities concert Series with recording artist Halley Elwell and musicians from the greater Boston area brought to us through an Urban Well community partnership with Schreiber Pediatric and its band of young musicians known as The UnSinkables!

Faith, Loyalty and Revolution

American Revolution Podcasts With

Dr. Cordelia Moyse

The first and second of a three-part Contemplative Citizenship series is now available on Podbean, Amazon and Spotify. If you'd like to hear it from our website, click here!

In this series, we explore with intellectual rigor and a contemplative spirit how our history as American citizens and as a faith community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has shaped us and others. In 1776, Lancaster was a thriving frontier town, and Saint James was at the heart of it. When revolution came, it tore the congregation apart. One member signed the Declaration of Independence. While many others enthusiastically embraced the patriot cause, the rector remained true to the King. And for a time, the church doors were nailed shut.

Parish historian Dr. Cordelia Moyse takes us back to meet the community that lived through it and asks what their choices might say about ours today.

Upper Room Men's Group

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it is a good time to contemplate our own place in this American story. David Brooks, in his final NYT column in January, looked back over the years since he began writing and how the world has changed most noticeably by American’s loss of faith in many forms. We will focus on his Reinhold Niebuhr quote near the end of his piece and reflect on what it means for us.

"If America could once again restore its secure emotional, material and spiritual base, maybe we could recover a smidgen of our earlier audacity. Oscar Wilde joked that youth is America’s oldest tradition. Maybe it’s time the country matured, and combined youthful energy with the kind of humility and wisdom that Reinhold Niebuhr packed into one of his most famous passages:

Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope. Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we are saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love, which is forgiveness.”

We are a welcoming group of men of all ages and walks of life. Come for a hearty breakfast and bring a friend!
