Headmaster Update
John Thornburg
Headmaster
Dear Parents,

Welcome to the first week of spring! We are told that God "makes all things new." My hope is the warm weather and the new life that emerges in the spring serves to remind us that God is with us and He will continue to provide us with strength and wisdom in the days to come.

Thank you for joining me for the State of the School Address last week! The presentation served to update our entire community on Malden Catholic's remarkable accomplishments. There is a lot happening at MC, from our enrollment growth and new academic courses to our new construction and unique summer leadership opportunities. There is much to be thankful for, and we are growing in very positive ways. We feel confident about moving boldly forward toward a very exciting and bright future.

I want to remind our families that we are committed to bringing all the students back into the building before the end of the school year. We are currently developing our "Return to School" plan, and this week we will meet with faculty and staff to discuss the details. Then, the final draft of the plan will be distributed the last week of March. Our plan will outline the specific dates that we will transition from our Hybrid Model to our Green Phase for full in-person learning. As part of the process, we will include a survey that will allow parents to choose if their child would like to attend in-person for the remainder of the year or stay remote, once we have returned to the full Green Phase.

The safety of our student body, our faculty and staff is always paramount, and we appreciate your patience as we develop a transition plan that will best serve the needs of everyone in our community.

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg

National Honor Society - March 29 and 30
This year is truly a historic one for the Brother Gilbert Chapter of the National Honor Society. Based on the current COVID-19 gathering limitations, we will induct 100 members into the NHS with two live ceremonies in the MC Auditorium, one for the Blue Cohort on March 29 and a second one for the Gold cohort on March 30th.

To make it easy for all guests to watch the event, we have decided to move our streaming platform to YouTube. Both of our ceremonies will be shared live on the MC YouTube page through YouTube Live. Once the event concludes, the students will process outside where parents can take pictures and enjoy a socially distant reception. Congratulations to all of our inductees!
TKS - Exclusive MC STEM Opportunity
Malden Catholic students have been invited to apply for a unique STEM-based program entitled, The Knowledge Society (TKS). This program is designed to train students to maximize their ability to make an impact on the world with a 10-month program that focuses on using emerging technologies such as blockchain, genomics, space tech and nanotech to solve important problems to shape the future. The program was created by entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley, who have built and sold companies and designed this unique experience with successful CEOs and global leaders, while also adopting new ideas from innovative companies like Google and SpaceX.

A limited number of students will be chosen from over 80 schools in the Boston area. The tuition is $439/month for the virtual program. Two seats for TKS have been reserved for MC students and the application deadline is April 5th. For more information, please see the attached link.

Club Spotlight: Investment Club
The Investment Club helps students understand how to invest in the stock market by learning the basic principles of investing. This includes discussing the performance of individual companies, understanding the price and valuation of investments and how to build a stock portfolio. In the Investment Club, students discuss current market dynamics and the issues driving successful markets. The club is also participating in a National stock market game where groups are managing portfolios focused on capital appreciation to provide a real-life view of managing a portfolio of stocks. The club meets on Wednesdays at 2:30 PM. If you would like to join this fun and educational group, please contact Mr. Forcione at: [email protected].
State of School Address
The Malden Catholic leadership team hosted the State of the School Address on Thursday, March 18th. This presentation provided updated information to families regarding Malden Catholic's accomplishments, summer construction, strategic planning, the MC Gala, summer programs and more. If you were not able to attend the event, you can view the webinar through this link.
Women's Day of Recollection
We would like to thank our special guest speaker, Sr. Norma Pimentel, MJ, for joining us live last Sunday for Part II of our Women's Day of Recollection. Sister Norma is a Mexican American nun of the Missionaries of Jesus and the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley. During her presentation, she spoke very passionately about her personal experiences with immigrant families who have spent up to two years detained at the United States border. We thank Sister Norma for joining us and truly admire her grace, love and compassion for all humanity!
St. Patrick and St. Joseph's Day Mass
On Wednesday, we celebrated the Feast Day of St. Patrick along with the Feast Day of St. Joseph with a Mass presided by Father John Sheridan. We would like to thank Father Sheridan for joining us along with Brother Puccio, Deidre Foley, Dr. Stephen Baccari and MC students, Shadel Kibirige and Daniel Hackett, for providing such a beautiful Mass celebration. The St. Patrick's Day Mass can be found on the MC YouTube channel.
XBSS Retreat Participants
Over the past several Wednesday evenings, 11 students representing MC have been participating in the virtual XBSS Student Retreat along with 100 students from the Xaverian Sponsored School system. Coordinated through the Sponsorship Office in Baltimore, this annual retreat calls on the talents of Grade 11 students from each of the 13 sponsored schools. Assisted by senior leaders, the students plan a mission-based service project for their school. The students also reflect upon a particular theme each session and this week, they focused on how each person is a unique expression of God’s love.
Service Opportunities
With spring approaching, this is an ideal time to give back to those who are less fortunate. Check out Campus Ministry's list of service opportunities for ways that you can get involved, click here.

Mock Trial Team Makes It to the Final Four Playoffs
Congratulations to the Malden Catholic 2020-2021 Mock Trial team for making it all the way to last night’s Final Four playoffs in the Massachusetts High School Mock Trial Tournament. The MC Mock Trial team ended the season by tying 3rd in the state! While we didn’t secure the win this year, it was an incredibly exciting and extremely close case presented before a panel of three judges. MC made history, taking part in a criminal trial entirely on Zoom format, where performances included delivering opening and closing statements, direct and cross examinations, raising and responding to objections, properly entering evidence and keeping time. The team had to prepare for both the prosecution and the defense of the same case and be ready to present either side. Way to go Plus Ultra, Lancers!
Mission Moment with Brother Puccio
I’m writing this on Friday, March 19. You’re probably reading it on Sunday. But I’ll stick with “today” for me and say Happy St. Joseph’s Day! I wrote about St. Joseph and St. Patrick last week so will turn attention elsewhere. Did you know that today is also “World Sleep Day”? I know! I had the same reaction... WORLD SLEEP DAY! What next? I pick up these little tidbits from radio news on my 12-minute drive to MC in the morning, and, yes, I was amused to learn that there even is such a thing as World Sleep Day. It had me wondering for a few moments, “Well, that must be a WILD holiday! How do you celebrate ‘Sleep Day’?” Yep, you guessed it... with SLEEP!

Before this little radio-news “shout out” to World Sleep Day was done, I had learned that the day was intended to remind people about good “sleep hygiene”! OK, there’s another two words I would never put together! But on those groggy mornings when we reluctantly drag ourselves out of bed, not quite awake for the next hour and desperately wanting to nap for the rest of the day, I’m sure we can all appreciate what it means to get a good night’s sleep... Call it what you will!

You can read more on our Malden Catholic Mission Moment Page.
