Headmaster Update
John Thornburg
Headmaster
Dear Families,

Last week, students returned to Malden Catholic one grade at a time. The hallways become alive with students, and enthusiastic, happy voices filled the entire building. This week begins with our in-person learning model or Green Phase. It will be the first time since March of 2020 that we have been able to begin a week of school with our entire student body. I could not be more encouraged or grateful that life is returning to normal.

Thank you for your steadfast support and perseverance. You have traveled with us, and the journey has not always been easy. Our families demonstrated strong resilience and patience over this past year. We couldn't have done it without you.

I would also like to thank you for your participation in MC's 15th Annual Gala last week. This was one of our most important school events, and the MC families outdid themselves by helping us get ready and supporting the Gala in very way possible. In particular, I would like to thank our MC Parent Council Advancement Committee leaders, Missy Barrett, Leanne Carbone and Rose Shea for spearheading the monumental task of organizing and collecting over 25 Malden Catholic auction baskets. I truly appreciate everyone's hard work and contributions to the auction. It was a huge success!

Thank you for all the blessings you provide to Malden Catholic,

John K. Thornburg

Malden Catholic 15th Annual Gala
When we named this year’s gala SOARING BEYOND Gala, we never could have imagined the heights to which we could rise or how truly extraordinary the evening would be. Somehow, Malden Catholic's incredible heart and light of our community continues to shine, even though we could not be together in person. While we look forward to the day when we can all gather together at MC, Thursday evening’s event was nothing short of extraordinary, filling us all with joy and hope, as we collectively shared our love for the Xaverian Mission.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the Soaring Beyond Gala, provided auction items and baskets and donated to the gala fund. You are extraordinary! And one more time, congratulations to our 2021 Gala Honorees, our own faculty and staff!

Winning bidders have been notified if they won an auction item. All baskets should be picked up at MC during school hours from Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 3 PM. Any basket containing alcohol must be claimed by an adult. Please reach out to Jeannine Reardon if you have any questions at [email protected]. All sponsors who gave more than $500 will receive the special MC SWAG Bag prize. We will reach out to all SWAG Bag recipients to coordinate your gift delivery.

If you did not have the chance to join us live, the video link is attached and we encourage you to watch program. Also, if you have not yet supported the MC Gala, please consider doing so now. There is still time to make a gift in support of the Gala or to honor a teacher!

AP Testing
AP Testing begins this Monday, May 3 and continues through Friday, May 14. Students are reminded to carefully read the instruction pages sent to their MC email from MC's School Counseling Director, Mrs. Caitlyn Oates. Please note the following instructions:

  • Students who are taking an 8:00 AM exam may go home once the exam is finished. If a student does not have a ride, or wishes to remain at school until the end of the school day, he/she may eat lunch in the cafeteria and then stay in the Learning Commons until dismissal.
  • Students who have a 12:00 PM exam do not need to come to school until the assigned time prior to the exam. Any student who has a 12:00 PM exam, but still needs to arrive early, may study in the Learning Commons prior to the exam.
  • All AP test takers may dress down for exams, following dress down guidelines.
MC's La Colaborativa Club Toiletry Collection Drive
MC's La Colaborativa Club will host a toiletry collection drive throughout the month of May, providing the school community an opportunity to unite for a very important cause. Collection boxes labeled with each grade (9,10 and 11) will be located at the front and rear entrances (Doors 1 and 11), as well as the main lobby. The class that donates the largest volume of toiletries by weight over the month will win a dress-down day. Faculty and staff will also have a designated box as well. Please provide the following items for local families in need:

  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrush
  • Mouth wash
  • Soap
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Toilet paper
  • Tissues
  • Deodorant
  • Diapers
  • Razors
  • Feminine products

"La Colaborativa" is a Latin-led, immigrant-friendly program that helps residents in Chelsea, East Boston, Lynn, Malden, and other surrounding communities by providing essential goods such as food, household products, and diapers to families in need. Our club was also recently featured in the Revere Journal. If you are interested in joining this engaging club, please email Mr. Kissel to receive the link to the next meeting.

Spring Baskets
The Students in Action group at Malden Catholic recently gathered to prepare beautiful spring baskets for the Housing Families in Malden. These baskets will be distributed to the 40+ children that participate in the Housing Families' programs. Basket items were generously donated by Leslie Manson-Hing, MC Admission's Administrative Assistant, and she shared her skills for artfully arranging the baskets with the Students in Action group. Way to go, Plus Ultra!
Student Art
Students enrolled in the Studio Art 2 have spent their year using different mediums for a variety of art projects. It is our pleasure to share some of these art projects with the community.

Charcoal:
The bottles drawn in charcoal in the adjacent image were created by a MC student in Mr. O'Donnell's art class. Students used shading to create an illusion featuring form and depth. The students embraced the challenge of working with this medium in the Hybrid Model and did an outstanding job of working on their art pieces both in school and at home.

Scratchboard:
The image of the nautilus was created with the use of scratchboard. This is a challenging medium, since it is the direct opposite process of working with a pencil on white paper and it is not possible to erase any mistakes. In this assignment, students use a white paper coated with a black film and scrape the surface to reveal the white underneath. The students were able to produce tremendously detailed art that closely resembles black and white photographic images.

Mission Moment
Mission Moment: Earth Day, April 22
One June day in 1969, the Cuyohoga River caught fire. The decade had also seen a major oil spill in Santa Barbara, growing concern for extinction of whales, Rachel Carson’s influence through her best-selling Silent Spring, and issues with freeways cutting through the vital centers of major cities. Environmentalism had been something of a sidenote to the mass anti-war protests of the late ‘60s, but law student Denis Hayes and Wisconsin Senator Gaylor Nelson wondered whether they could harness some of the youthful energy of the day – before internet, before cell phones, before email – to raise an environmental call to action on a grand scale. They proposed a national “teach-in” for April 22, 1970, where cities around the country would focus on local environmental issues. The day, in fact, with the help of newspapers and mimeographs, caught on world-wide, and approximately 20 million people participated in Earth Day activities 51 years ago.  Not long after, The Environmental Protection Agency was ...
