Happy Mother's Day!

I trust this weekend our families have taken the time to celebrate and honor a very important group of individuals - moms! We all have been impacted by the love and support of mothers, grandmothers, aunts and even sometimes by someone else's mom. Malden Catholic is tremendously blessed by all of the mothers who have supported us over the years! This year, we are truly thankful for all the work our mothers have done on behalf of MC, especially those involved in our Parent Council.

Last year, I shared my own Mother's Day story. I recounted my attempt to purchase my mom a card as a young boy. I didn't have the money which resulted in asking the only person who I knew would give me some - my mother. I explained why I needed it and she obliged. My next hurdle was getting to the store to buy the card. Again, I had to rely on my only source of transportation, and she agreed. Once I arrived at the store, with money in my hand, I changed my mind and selfishly purchased myself a squirt gun. My mother has never allowed me to forget that day.

This year I sent her a box of chocolates from Tuck's Candy since she had visited before the pandemic, and she really liked their candy. The box arrived at her home in Minnesota two days ago. She sent me the following text:

"Thank you so much for the delicious candy. One question: WHERE IS THE SQUIRT GUN? Love you."

This would be the 49th year in a row that I have received this type of message... so you never know when you might start your own Mother's Day tradition. I encourage all of our students to make sure to show their mother the love and honor she truly deserves this special day.

By the way, I did send my mother a squirt gun twenty years ago in an attempt to change our tradition to no avail. I am looking forward to our 50-year mark next year,

Happy Mother's Day!

Mission Moment
Mission Moment: Reflection on The Ascension

“He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.”  We hear these words often and pray them ourselves as part of our Creed, our public statement of beliefs. This Thursday we commemorate the Ascension and the transforming power that we recognize through this event.

During the 40 days that Jesus remained on earth after his resurrection, sharing meals with his disciples and teaching about his Kingdom, his full glory as God was still veiled in his humanity. In Jesus’s Ascension and return to the Father, however, he was glorified; he was transformed; and as in so many other instances, Jesus provides for us a model, leading the way for us to heaven, showing us the goal of our journey to closer union with God.

We, too, can be transformed.  And – maybe even . . .
