Headmaster Update
John Thornburg
Headmaster
Dear Families,

I’ve learned the roads in New England are unpredictable and the drivers, at times, challenging. My Midwestern driving skills have had to evolve with greater awareness and defensiveness. Otherwise, my daily commute would be even more difficult.

I commented to my wife that the roads in New England are not as smooth or well-kept as the Midwest. This comment was based upon the regular shimmying my car has experienced and frequent thumping of my tires across the surface of the road. In fact, my coffee would get stirred by itself in the cup holder with the movement and bumps that mixed my cream and sugar on the way to school.

Over the past month on my way to MC, a section of the road was repaved with a new smooth asphalt surface. With great expectations of a smoother ride, my car passed onto the new pavement with ease. Imagine my disappointment when my car continued to shake and thump! A car passed me on the road, and I noticed that the other vehicle was experiencing a much smoother ride. In that moment, I realized that the bumps were not caused by a problem with the road...it was caused by my car.

I made an appointment with my local car mechanic, who told me that my tires had uneven wear and I desperately needed an alignment. A new set of tires and an alignment transformed my car into a gentle ride. My travels were much smoother. I had blamed the road instead of identifying the real issue.

This situation made me wonder how many times I had blamed rough or difficult circumstances on my spiritual journey instead of looking at myself. Each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34), and it is essential we do what is necessary to align ourselves to His will. We may not be able to avoid the cracks in the road, but we can be prepared to take full responsibility and to be in the best possible position to find a solution.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Thank you for your support,

MC Spotlight
Faculty Spotlight: Ms. Maria Touet - Librarian
Dear Malden Catholic Community,

I am very fortunate to be the new Librarian at Malden Catholic. In many ways, working at MC is a dream come true! I have worked in Catholic schools for over 25 years. I was the librarian at Our Lady of Nazareth Academy and at Pope John XXIII High School. For the last two years I was a traveling librarian for three K-8 Malden public schools.

There is nothing like a Catholic education! I have seen kids become better human beings because of their experiences not only as a result of the great education they receive, but also the care and nurturing teachers and administrators demonstrate on a daily basis.

After graduating from Bunker Hill Community College and later getting my Bachelor’s degree at UMass/Boston, I eventually earned my Masters degree in Library Science from Simmons College.

I have a passion for showing students how and where to find information and hopefully encourage students to read, which will carry over into their lives beyond MC. I am also very lucky to now work with the amazing faculty and staff at MC and share in the collaborative environment fostered by the educators.

For this year, I have many items on my to-do list. I am currently working on reviving our online databases and other subscriptions for our students to use for research. I also want to add some new and diverse titles to our collections for students to read for enjoyment, inspiration and enlightenment.

ALS/MS Walk for Living - 11.12 from 12 -3 PM
Malden Catholic will participate in the Leonard Florence Center for Living’s ALS/MS Walk for Living. for the 8th consecutive year. The Leonard Florence Center, located in Chelsea, cites that it “…is the country’s first urban-model Green-House®- skilled nursing facility. Notably, the Center cares for more individuals living with ALS than anywhere else in the world. What’s even more unique is that residents, many of whom are completely immobilized, can control lights, turn on the TV, call for the elevator, open doors and raise window shades, all with help of a computer and sensor that tracks head and eye movements for instruction. This technology enables them to move freely through the entire residence. It is this degree of independence that vastly improves the residents’ quality of life.”

ALS has touched the lives of many in our Malden Catholic community. This summer we mourned the death of Tim Paquette ’07, son of Nurse Elizabeth Paquette and Swim Coach Rick Paquette. Some of you may have seen recent media spots on Chris Snow (MC ’99), bravely living through his several-year ALS diagnosis as normally as possible with family. Xaverian Brother Joseph Comber, recently deceased, lived his last three years at the Leonard Florence Center, with the care of Brother Timothy Hoey, former MC Social Studies Chair. Through this Walk we honor Tim, Chris, Brother Joe and their companions Every single dollar raised goes directly back to patient care and programs for the ALS and MS residents at Leonard Florence.

We are inviting MC students, parents and other supporters to gather at our Brother Myles McManus Track between noon and 3:00 pm on Friday, November 12, for a 3-mile walk. The Walk can be fulfilled virtually as well.

To participate, we ask that students register at school with a $15 registration fee. Credit card registration may also take place on-line for students or parents with the “Malden Catholic” Team.

Adult registration is $20. Students who register at school or online by October 22 with our Malden Catholic Team for $15 will get a Walk for Life t-shirt. Adult t-shirts come with a $25 registration-donation on our Team page. Sponsorship beyond those amounts are most welcome. Please make sure your name is visible on Team fundraising page. Brother Thomas Puccio is listed as MC Team captain.
What's Happening Around MC?
Green Team
Malden Catholic and the MC Green Team, founded by Senior Sarah Cirame ’22 (centered),  was honored with a certificate from the City of Malden by Councilor Stephen Winslow at the October Climate Forum for their amazing efforts in protecting the environment in and around the city. The certificate reads in part: “… to Malden Catholic and the MC Green Team for their outstanding community service efforts in caring for and protecting the environment in and around the city of Malden. We thank you for your leadership by example, including but not limited to the recent and continuing work of those students who dedicated their time this year to promote the cleanup of the Malden River.”

Recently, The MC Green Team planted flowers around the St. Joseph statute at Malden Catholic to enhance the aesthetics of the MC campus. Thank you, MC Green team for such a beautiful job!
St. Francis Xavier Society Reception
Malden Catholic celebrated the school’s most generous benefactors at the annual Saint Francis Xavier Society Reception on Wednesday, October 13.
Membership in the SFX Society is attained by making a gift to Malden Catholic of $1,000 or more to the Fund for Malden Catholic in a fiscal year. The Saint Francis Xavier Society was founded by Mr. Joe O’Donnell in 1994. In that year, the four founding members contributed $8,000 to the Fund for Malden Catholic. Since that day, the SFX Society has grown to over 170 members whose philanthropy enhances and strengthens the MC experience for students and provides the essential scholarship assistance that is foundational to success and achievement at MC and beyond.

Last Wednesday, Headmaster John Thornburg provided SFX members with an update regarding the many successes that the school has enjoyed over the past year including the academic success of MC graduates, rigorous curriculum, strong enrollment, and capital improvements to the facility. Board Chair Jim Donovan H' 2011 acknowledged individuals leaving a legacy to Malden Catholic through their support of MC’s Ryken Planned Giving Society. Joseph J. O’Donnell '62 impressed attendees with an update on Saint Francis Xavier Society giving, reporting that in the past fiscal year, SFX members contributed $748K to the Fund for Malden Catholic, representing nearly 87% of unrestricted dollars raised for student scholarships. Saint Francis Xavier Scholars Nathan Ford '22 and Angie Mejia '22 shared recollections of the impact of their experiences and expressed gratitude to the donors for their generosity.

Thank you to everyone who attended!
LancerPalooza!
Malden Catholic celebrated the 3rd annual LancerPalooza last Friday with food trucks, games, contests and entertainment on a beautiful evening that was enjoyed by all. Thank you to everyone who attended and the 30 MC parents who volunteered to assist with the event!
