Headmaster Update
John Thornburg
Headmaster
Dear Families,

The first week of school has finally arrived! The theme for this week will be "new spaces and new faces." Our Phase 1 construction has been completed and new classrooms including a science lab and a girls' locker room are ready for use. We have 4 full classes of boys and girls for the first time at MC and due to our increased enrollment, we have many new faculty and staff who are joining the MC Family.

Once again, our goal this year is to provide a Culture of Health and Safety. This will allow us to provide in-person instruction for every student without interruption. We expect everyone to strictly follow our COVID-19 protocols. This means that we will be testing every Monday morning unvaccinated students, as well as any student (unvaccinated or vaccinated) who participates in fall co-curricular teams or clubs. This step is to ensure the safety of these students. We expect to get results in 15 minutes and those students with negative results will be sent to their morning class. We do not expect the testing procedures to interfere with class attendance.

Please keep in mind that we all need to do everything we can to protect the health of each and every member of our MC community. With this in mind, I encourage all families to have their son or daughter vaccinated. Our vaccination rate will play an important role this fall. It will determine which individuals need to be quarantined and mitigate the spread of the virus among our school community. A high vaccination rate will also enable us to reach a tipping point where weekly testing will no longer be necessary. I realize the topic of vaccinations is a polarizing one, but in the end, it will allow us to have an uninterrupted school year where students can attend in-person daily and continue to have an exceptional MC educational experience!

Thank you for your support,

John K. Thornburg

MC Spotlight
Faculty Spotlight: Lora Tamagini – MC's Fine Arts Department Chair
Ms. Lora Tamagini has been named Malden Catholic's new Fine Arts Department Chair. Her goal for the Malden Catholic 2021-2022 school year is to cultivate a band and orchestra program while continuing to grow the choral, drama, dance and fine arts programs. "We have wonderful teachers in the performing and fine arts departments at Malden Catholic and we want to give all of our students every opportunity to diversify their transcripts and build confidence as they move through these vital years in their academic careers.”

Ms. Tamagini holds degrees from both New England Conservatory of Music (Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance), Boston University College of Performing Arts (Master of Education) and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Northeastern University, completing her thesis study this month, her focus in the inclusion classroom.

Her past teaching experience includes Concert Choir Director at the Special Music School at the Kaufman Music Center in New York City, Lynn Classical High School and Our Lady of Nazareth Academy in Wakefield.

Ms. Tamagini is currently the Director of Music at the Church of the Transfiguration at St. Thomas of Villanova in Wilmington, Massachusetts, and the Program Director Apprentice Program for the Summer Institute for the Vocal Arts, New York City. She is an accomplished performer, voice teacher, choral conductor, and musical director----directing over 24 full scale musicals and 17 competing drama productions at the Massachusetts Drama Festival, as well as personally touring through Europe, Asia and the United States as an oratorio and operatic soloist and we are delighted to have her as our new Fine Arts Department Chair.

Malden Catholic Back-to-School Information
Malden Catholic remains committed to mitigating risk and promoting the health and well-being of our community. As we approach the reopening of school amid the COVID-19 virus, we need to find the balance of living with COVID-19 and maintaining a rigorous academic schedule along with a rich co-curricular life without interruptions. The MC COVID-19 Task Force Team has decided on a multidisciplinary approach that has a proven record of success, including weekly testing. We will assess our procedures throughout the school year and modify them based upon government regulations, risk assessments and our school data. Please refer to the COVID-19 Policy that was sent to parents and students on August 28, 2021.

Initial Testing for All Unvaccinated Individuals and Vaccinated Students Participating in Sports and Activities
Initial testing for unvaccinated individuals and vaccinated students who will be participating in sports and activities will begin on September 13 at 7 AM. Students will need to report to the gym (entry Door #7). Since MC students have already registered for baseline testing in the Curative system, they will simply provide their name upon arrival for testing. No student will be allowed in the school without a PCR test result on record in the Nurse's office. If a student has not yet registered or completed baseline testing, please contact the Nurses' office.

Student Verification Form
Parents, all students received a hard copy of our Student Information Verification and Authorization Form. We ask that you carefully review all the information on that sheet, correct anything that is wrong and add in any missing information. At the bottom of the form are two questions that require you to circle yes or no. Once you have finished reviewing, editing and answering the questions, kindly sign the form and ask your son or daughter to return the form to his/her Homeroom Teacher by Wednesday, September 8.

Entry
Boys enter through Door 11 and Girls through Door 1. The doors to the school will be open 7 AM and the first class begins at 8 AM.

Books
Students must purchase books before coming to school. To allow more flexibility in purchasing books, MC is not working with Follet this year. Instead, we are suggesting online sites where books may be purchased at discount prices. When purchasing texts, please make sure to follow the instructions on the  Curriculum Guide. Students should match their courses to the guide in order to purchase books. In addition, please be sure to check the ISBN numbers before purchasing any books. The options for purchasing are through the following suggested online sites:

Parent/Student Handbook
The Parent/Student Handbook will be available online next week. Once available, parents and students are asked to read the handbook and then sign the form that we will send home. Your signature on this form will acknowledge that you have read the document and agree to abide by the rules and expectations cited in the Handbook.
Malden Catholic Official Communication Channels
Malden Catholic is committed to growing a healthy community by making sure any information we pass along comes from our Administrative team. Our official social media pages are the most accurate, up-to-date source of information and the Headmaster Update is our weekly news source for the school. We strongly encourage our parents to follow these official Malden Catholic social media platforms:

If any of our families have questions, we ask that they call or email one of our MC Administrators for accurate information rather than relying upon unofficial channels for information or hearsay.
MC Summer Camps
Malden Catholic was active this summer with the resurgence of our MC Athletic Summer Camps. Over 320 campers arrived on campus throughout the summer for a wide variety of athletic camps and clinics including boys’ and girls’ soccer, football, softball, cross country, boys' and girls’ lacrosse, baseball, girls’ and boys’ hockey, boys' and girls’ basketball and learn-to-play clinics for Rugby and Field Hockey.

We would like to offer a special thank you to the many Malden Catholic coaches and student-athletes who took part and helped in the development of this incredibly successful program. Due to the success of our Summer Camp program, we have plans to expand the camp offerings next summer!
