MEET THE NEW ADDITION TO THE HEADWATERS PARADE OF HORSES

Sir Headwaters by Deborah Jolly is the newest addition to the Headwaters Parade of Horses. Sir Headwaters was lovingly painted by Headwaters artist, Deborah Jolly at the Can-Am All Breeds Equine Expo, April 1-3, 2016. The statue was first unveiled at the Headwaters Horse Country Excellence Awards gala, May 11, 2016 and is now in place at its new home at the Headwaters Tourism offices in Mono (246372 Hockley Road).


Provincial and federal governments investing in craft beer sector

During Craft Beer Week (June 10th to June 19th), the Ontario government and the Government of Canada announced that they are investing over $1.6 million in the projects of 20 craft breweries across Ontario to help them expand operations and to continue to  grow the province's craft beer industry.

Ontario strengthens protections for consumers buying travel services 
 
New changes to the regulation under the Travel Industry Act came into effect on July 1, 2016 that will reduce burden on businesses and demonstrate Ontario's continued response to changes in the marketplace. One-day tour operators, such as winery and beer tours, will now be exempt from all requirements under the Act, including the need to register and contribute to the Ontario Travel Industry Compensation Fund. Not-for-profit organizations that promote tourism in Ontario may also benefit from greater flexibility in meeting registration and operating requirements related to security deposits and working capital.

Ontario has launched a new five-year strategy that will help social enterprises grow their businesses, enter new markets and create jobs, while addressing complex social and environmental challenges.

Building the Workforce of Tomorrow: A Shared Responsibility makes recommendations on how the province can build on its world-class skills, education and training systems to prepare Ontario's current and future workforce for the technology- and knowledge-based jobs of today and tomorrow.

Central Counties Tourism 
Central Counties Tourism hosted their Annual General Meeting on June 15th, 2016. Information on partnership, marketing, sales and B2B opportunities were highlighted.


SUBMISSION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO JULY 15, 2016    
 
The Ontario Tourism Awards of Excellence celebrate industry success and recognize those who have made significant contributions to tourism in Ontario. The awards are divided into three respective categories: the Tourism Industry Awards of Excellence, the Tourism Marketing and Travel Media Awards of Excellence, and the Culinary Tourism Awards of Excellence. Do you embody the spirit of tourism in Ontario? Has your organization created a new product, policy or service to enhance and promote tourism? Did your business make a viable and maintainable contribution to the promotion of sustainable tourism? You may be eligible for an award!

Mono's Athlete Institute alumni drafted in top 10 of NBA draft
 
Residents of the Headwaters region know that the area is one of the top destinations in North America for basketball development, thanks to the Athlete Institute in Orangeville. And now the rest of the world is finding out too, thanks most recently to the fact that Jamal Murray and Thon Maker, former high school teammates at the Athlete Institute in Mono, Ontario, both went in the top-10 at the recent NBA draft.

Headwaters native named to Canada's triathlon team for RIO 2016 Olympic Games 

The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Triathlon Canada recently announced a youthful, yet experienced team of three women and two men, including Headwaters' own Andrew Yorke, who will showcase a new era for triathlon in Canada when they wear the country's red and white race suits while swimming, biking and running at Fort Copacabana at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games from August 5th to 21st.

Erin Town Crier wins provincial championship


The Ontario Guild of Town Criers held its annual Provincial Championships on May 21 & 22 as a signature event of the 200th anniversary celebrations of Perth, in Lanark County, and the Town of Erin's Official Town Crier, Andrew Welch, was declared the overall winner. Welch also serves as the Town Crier for the Town of Caledon.

Great War Flying Museum celebrates grand re-opening


On May 21, 2016, hundreds of visitors attended the grand re-opening of the Great War Flying Museum. Located at the Brampton Flight Centre in Caledon, the grand re-opening was timely, given the Museum celebrates their 70th anniversary in 2016 (1946 to 2016). Completely renovated, the Museum provides one of the finest presentations of World War I aviation as well as acquiring, building and maintaining actual flying representations of period aircraft.

Kitchen to Table featured in HomeStyle magazine


Orangeville's own Kitchen to Table was recently featured in the May 2016 issue of HomeStyle Canada's Housewares Magazine. Following the January 2016 move of the store to a new and larger location on First Street in Orangeville, owner Sigrid Wolm notes that the new location will position the store to appeal to the next generation of "foodies".

CANADA 150 CELEBRATIONS IN HEADWATERS
 
Headwaters Tourism has developed a planning calendar for Canada 150 celebrations taking place in the region. The purpose of the shared calendar is to encourage event organizers to consider events throughout the entire year and avoid challenges with too many activities happening on the same dates.

We encourage event organizers to not only submit their events to us for inclusion in the planning calendar, but also to review the Canada 150 planning calendar before booking your event date.

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES ONTARIO 150 PROJECT
 
On July 6th, the Ontario government announced the province's plan to honour the 150th  
anniversary of Confederation and recognized 150 years of Ontario as a province within Canada.
 
The Ontario150 program is a series of events and initiatives that will stretch to every corner of our province, showcasing Ontario's innovative spirit, our culture and our community diversity.
In addition to a number of signature events planned across the province, municipalities, community organizations and Indigenous groups will be able to access funding programs designed to bring people together, while laying the groundwork for a strong economic, social and cultural legacy for Ontario's next 150 years.

There are three application-based Ontario150 grant programs. They include:

The Headwaters Equine Leadership Group invites equine facility owners and event organizers in the Headwaters Region (Town of Caledon, Dufferin County, Town of Erin and King Township) to participate in the 9th annual Headwaters Horse Country Stable Tour taking place: Saturday & Sunday, October 1 - 2 from 10am to 4pm. 
 
This is a unique opportunity to open your stable doors to the general public and showcase your facility and operations.
 
There is no cost to participate in the Headwaters Horse Country Stable Tour, and you can take part in this unique event by registering your stable before August 21st. Participating facilities will select the date(s) that they will participate (October 1 & 2).
