Wisdom From The Herd

A Change in the Seasons

There’s something about this time of year — a certain crispness in the early morning air, sunshine that has lost its summer heat, and trees transforming from lush green to an artist’s palette of golds, yellows, oranges, and reds.

If you’re fortunate enough to live near the mountains, you might even hear the haunting call of elk bugling as they gather their new mates. Nature is preparing — and so are we. It’s the season of “winterizing.” Whether it’s your car, your home, your lawn, or your RV, we all have our rituals of getting ready for what’s ahead.

But preparation isn’t just about the practical. Like nature, we too can take this time to gather our energy and shift inward.

The Danish have a beautiful word for this — Hygge (pronounced Hoo-gah). It describes a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. A similar word, Hugge, extends that sense of warmth to moments spent lighting candles, baking, or spending time with loved ones at home.

So as the days grow shorter, let your world slow down a bit. Make time — take time — to truly connect. Set aside the devices, the noise, the constant scrolling. Remember: humans can talk without their thumbs.

Get quiet. Go within. Feel gratitude.

What do you notice? What are you aware of?

It’s in these still moments that we can rediscover how fortunate we are — where inspiration bubbles up, solutions appear, and that small, still voice inside us can finally be heard.

Go ahead. Try it. “Prepare” to be amazed.

CENTERING

written by Dawn Mathis

In these times we live in, we hear so much about strife, war, intolerance, violence, and hatred. It feels like a whirlwind of immense proportions.

How can we cope?

And then, there’s the whirlwind of everyday life—deadlines, commitments, bills, and the constant juggling of work-life balance.

How do we cope with that?

As someone who often finds herself caught in the midst of it all—and as an empath—I admit that I struggle at times. What I’m learning to remind myself is this: pause. Take a breath. Look around.

Keep tasks simple. Do less.

In that quiet space between the notes of life’s sometimes frenetic symphony—when I can do that—I feel like dancing.
