We recently asked one of our mothers, "what makes you happiest these days"? She answered:
"My kids are PROUD of me! They've taken 3 steps forward- they're adjusted, they're happy."
We often talk about the achievements of adults in our program- the GPA they earn, the car they can finally purchase- but the growth of the kids is just as meaningful.
The reality is that adults aren't the only ones affected by homelessness. Children who have experienced homelessness:
* experience 3 times the rate of emotional and behavioral problems
|
* are 4 times more likely to show delayed development
|
* have 2 times the rate of chronic and acute illnesses
|
But they also aren't the only ones transformed by ending homelessness.
The changes children undergo at Saranam are often more subtle- learning to play outside with friends, sleeping in their own bed, or talking about their feelings- but the impact is enduring and pivotal to their family's success.
It seems simple, but kids' ability to simply enjoy their childhood inspires their parents to keep reaching. Their drive comes not just from knowing that their kids are safe, but that they have a future.
"I want them to have goals- to know that they can do whatever they want to do. I want them to see me struggle but also succeed."- Mother pursuing nursing at Saranam

This kind of growth is on the front of our minds this month, when we would normally gather to celebrate the life and memory of our dear friend, Sean Hopkins. Among many things, Sean was a coach and mentor and he cared deeply about making sure kids felt supported and valued.
Kids in our program continue to feel his passion through our integrated family programming and through opportunities like the Sean Hopkins Memorial Fund, which enables kids to reap the benefits of sports and extracurricular activities. This program helps dozens of families recapture this fun, critical part of their childhood every year.
"I love to take my son to swimming lessons and watch him interact with everyone... he made new friends and became a great swimmer. The privilege of having "a normal life" is something I sincerely appreciate."- Saranam alumni

Creating opportunities for families to heal, to learn and to thrive together is what we support with our fall campaign. Generational change begins here at Saranam, and for kids, that change starts with a hug and a laugh.
