Final Last-Chance Option

for Joining the Fall Cleanse

Did you know that the average life expectancy for Americans has actually dropped? Alongside this bad news is the fact that too few of us feel well enough to live the spirited and joyful life we'd prefer, especially when we age. Dr. Pfeiffer outlined the most common reasons for this at his last cleanse preview of 2021 on September 14.

For those of you who missed it, there remains a small window of opportunity to participate in the 2021 Fall Cleanse. There's still time to get in on what Dr. Pfeiffer believes is the best way to improve your situation and start living a longer, healthier life.

But you must contact the Center by noon on Sept. 30.

to Join the Fall Cleanse,

before it's too late.

WE’RE HERE FOR YOU.

The office is bustling.

You may have noticed that our office has been bustling, both on the chiropractic side as well as the nutritional side. People are embracing the idea that life is better when your body is at its best. That's exactly why we're here, and we're thrilled to be the area leader in natural health and wellness, helping you move right, think right, sleep right, and eat right.

However, sometimes the provider himself needs to take a rest. Thus, I will be on vacation during the last week of September. For those who require chiropractic care that week, Dr. Jeff Skiar, a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic Services and the former Medical Director of Chiropractic Services at Philadelphia's Cancer Treatment Centers of America, has agreed to stand in. The partnership is based on a synergy between our treatment style, philosophy, and expertise.

Meanwhile, time has run out on preparations for the Fall Cleanse. See the event spotlight column for details on how to jump aboard this departing opportunity.

Finally, after 18 months of stressful Covid-19 precautions, I ask that you remember the power of empathy when it comes to healing and wellness. For example, read my Featured Article below.

And remember: we're here for you.

Empathy’s Effect on Parkinson’s and Stroke Patients

friends_on_a_bench.jpg

We humans are social animals. That may be difficult to recall in light of the anti-social edicts that we have been subject to over the last year and a half: mask wearing, working from home, and social distancing. Still, observing another’s smile, laughter, or tears allows us to “feel for that person.” These and other actions or behaviors cause us to empathize with them. Perhaps, put another way, we can “connect with what they are experiencing.”

This process all starts with nerve cells in our brains called “mirror neurons.” These cells, which are located in various areas of the brain, allow us to respond in kind to other’s actions, touches, or emotions.

We respond this way to all animals, our pets included. This may explain why therapy dogs can have a significantly positive impact on patients’ health and the trajectory of their disease processes. The patient is exposed to the animal’s love.

Taken a step further, this may also have contributed to the downfall taken by many elderly and infirmed nursing home and hospital residents after family members and friends were barred from visiting them due to Covid precautions.

Mirror neurons actually cause us to mimic the behavior observed in other people or animals. They also can be stimulated by one's own emotions or actions. Researchers have found that these special nerve cells help to heal the damage caused by both Parkinson’s and stroke. You see, these mirror neurons help by “mimicking” the behavior observed, and they are activated by watching others.

The researchers used a specific exercise app, called 9zest, to study the effects on Parkinson’s patients. The concept is this: by using this app and having patients watch the exercises being performed, they will activate undamaged mirror neurons in their brains. This then “primes” the brain and body to “mimic the movements” once the patients are able to begin performing the same exercise.

This amazing app also assesses the patient’s current status through a series of questions and performance tests. A customized exercise program can then be developed specifically for that patient’s level of ability. The app contains a library of specific exercises designed for those with Parkinson’s. The app also supports and encourages the patient through a series of prompts, graded tasks, goal setting, and direct feedback.

The research demonstrated that after 12 weeks, balance, mobility, leg strength, and quality of life for these Parkinson’s patients noted improvement in all of these areas. Amazingly, 63 percent of Parkinson’s patients involved in this study noted improvement in their symptoms.

But we need to be able to see, touch, and experience each other in order for this to happen. And it's safe to say, empathy can go along way in improving many other conditions in our lives. So while we need to remain cautious during the outbreak of any contagious disease, do not forget that our connections keep us alive.

Lauren

Meet Our Newest Staff Member: Lauren

Lauren Merkel grew up in Fleetwood, PA and attended school at Brandywine Heights Area School District. Directly following high school, she began working full time and living on her own shortly after. Wanting to further her education, she recently enrolled in the Reading Area Community College’s addiction studies/human services program. In working toward her degree, she needed a stable job that she could grow into, which is what led her to Upper Perk Chiropractic Center.

Lauren said, “I have developed a better understanding of hard work and the impact of helping others through this job in a short amount of time. I really enjoy meeting new people and conversing with individuals on a daily basis, while playing a part in their journey to better health.”

Be sure to say “hello” to Lauren when you see her at your next appointment.
