GENERAL NEWS

  • Situation Update Changes: Due to the upcoming holidays, our next Situation Update will be published on Thursday, December 22. In 2023, we will begin publishing the Situation Update monthly. Situation Updates will still be emailed and will continue to be available on our website. The COVID-19 Data Summary will continue to be published weekly and available our website.

  • Free Narcan Training: The Winnebago County Health Department is hosting virtual training on recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose and using Narcan (naloxone) to reverse an opioid overdose. The training is free and available to anyone in the community. Training is scheduled for:
  • Tuesday, December 13, at 12 to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
  • Register at wchd.pub/narcantraining22 or call 920-232-3000.

Narcan is easy to use and is available locally, free of charge, at the Winnebago County Health Department's Oshkosh office, Solutions Recovery, Vivent and Unity Recovery Services. Fentanyl test strips can also be found at the health department and Vivent.

  • Prevent Underage Drinking During the Holidays: You can’t always prevent your child from being offered alcohol, but you can help them be prepared if it occurs. During the holiday season, kids may have more exposure to alcohol. If you’re at a holiday party where all ages and alcohol are included, remember that kids are always watching and often try to emulate the behavior of the people they respect and admire. This is a good opportunity to lead by example and use your influence to help prevent underage drinking. Have age-appropriate conversations. Every child is different but understanding where most kids around your child’s age are in their development can help start conversations about underage drinking. Not sure where to begin? Get tips on having age-appropriate conversations about alcohol. Giving kids the tools to handle peer pressure is one of the most important things you can do to help them make healthy choices and stay alcohol-free.

  • New Wellness Plus Classes are Starting! Join the Strong Bodies Class and Stand Up! classes this winter. Classes are available throughout Winnebago County. Find a full list of Wellness Plus classes at wchd.pub/wellnessclasses. Call the Winnebago County Health Department at 920-232-3000 to register or if you have additional questions.

Strong Bodies is a research proven strength training class for men and women 55 and older. The class meets twice a week for 12 weeks. Strength training improves bone density, arthritis symptoms, flexibility, mood, confidence levels and reduces falls.

Stand Up! helps you make simple, everyday changes to increase how often you stand. It is NOT an exercise program, but uses strategies to add more standing time a day. This class is proven to decrease the risk of heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, and early death.

  • Next Week is National Influenza Vaccination Week: There’s still time to get vaccinated against flu! Flu vaccines are proven to reduce the risk of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. Since flu viruses are constantly changing and protection from vaccination decreases over time, getting a vaccine every year is the best way to prevent flu. Vaccination is particularly important for people at higher risk of developing serious flu complications, including young children. This flu season is already more severe than previous seasons. To keep yourself and your loved ones healthy, get vaccinated.
