Dear Friends and Supporters,
Earlier this week, I spoke with WBUR and shared the disturbing news:
Health Imperatives is losing more than $1.8 million in Medicaid funding - funding that covers essential care like cancer screenings, annual exams, birth control, HIV and STI treatment and prevention, and gender affirming care.
Why? Because of a political provision buried in the federal "Big Beautiful" tax bill passed last month.
Only three providers nationwide were singled out: Planned Parenthood, Maine Family Planning and us - Health Imperatives.
But unlike the others, in addition to sexual and reproductive healthcare, Health Imperatives is the only one providing other services including:
- Women Infants and Children nutrition assistance
- Emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence
- Housing for survivors of sex trafficking
- Specialized programs for young parents and LGBTQIA+ youth
This isn't about abortion - it's about punishment. We've never billed Medicaid for abortion care, yet we're being stripped of critical funding simply because we offer it.
This is a direct attack on low-income, vulnerable people - women, families and individuals who depend on us.
We are working closely with the Commonwealth to find interim solutions and are seeking private funding to keep our clinics open and services available. But time is not on our side.
That's where you come in. If you’ve ever supported Health Imperatives, now is the time to act. Your voice, your donation, your partnership - it all matters now more than ever.
Together, we can fight back against this short-sighted and dangerous decision. We can ensure that access to care isn’t dictated by politics, but by the needs of the people we serve.
With gratitude,
Julia E. Kehoe
