Last week revealed 7151 as the estimated number of languages spoken globally.

As our multi-lingual journey launches, contemplate which ethnic groups in your area should benefit from educational information in their native language. I’ve already heard suggestions for Spanish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Bosnian and Arabic.

For easy reference, explore:

The Most Commonly Spoken Language in Every U.S. State (Besides English and Spanish)

“We typically operate under the assumption that most Americans speak either English or Spanish. Though this is true in the broadest sense, the U.S. is a culturally diverse country, home to a plethora of languages.” 1

Our Health Literacy paths will be purposely driven by patient-centrism, inclusion and empathy. As often referenced, Cleveland Clinic video poignantly expresses:

“If you could hear what they hear, see what they see and feel what they feel, would you treat them differently.”

Let's walk in the shoes of Maria, a 59-year-old Spanish speaking person with moderate hearing loss and suspected diabetes.

From an auditory standpoint, Maria’s limited soundscape is detrimental amid family conversations and attempted workplace dialogue. Her career progress is inhibited by communication difficulties and social isolation elicits sadness episodes. With chronically negative impacts apparent, family members suggest seeing a highly respected primary care provider, for urgent guidance on which specialists should expertly evaluate her diabetes status and hearing function. At the soonest available PCP appointment, one month later, Maria’s anxiety was acute.

Perusing PCP’s waiting room’s educational displays, she saw:

Although colorful circles appeared interesting, English text was unfamiliar. Gazing across the room, a gentleman was discussing the same brochure with his wife. While they clearly found it useful, in contrast, Maria felt despondent. She was eager to learn and must know, otherwise how could healthcare decisions be properly made?

Upon exam, in comfortable conversation, the (thankfully…) bilingual PCP recommended a hearing care professional and highlighted research showing hearing loss was about twice as likely for those with diabetes. She listened closely and although words were muffled, she got the message. With some trepidation, Maria mentioned colorful circle’s brochure, explaining why it was not understandable. Recognizing anguished concern, he warmly shared a new Spanish version brochure their practice made available:

With a sense of relief and accessing brochure in hand, Maria asked vital questions. While previously feeling “in the dark,” the opportunity to discuss educational content in Spanish was enlightening. Beyond research-based content, sharing is caring, and PCP’s genuine commitment to do so in more understandable ways was deeply meaningful.

Days later, she met kind professionals at Hometown Hearing, a locally owned practice having served their community for decades. Throughout expert evaluation, confidence grew she would receive wellness information needed and personal touch deserved. Given her daily communication challenges, as test results validated, formal diagnosis of hearing loss was as expected. What surprised and delighted, was when case history discussion of her diabetes centered on this Did You Know? handout.

She learned about the term, Comorbidity, signifying how one medical condition or chronic disease may relate to another. For the first time, awareness of how diabetic symptoms could negatively impact her inner ear’s tiny blood vessels was brought to her attention. From HCP’s proud perspective, another trusting patient and those in their circle of life would be In the Know.

Health Literacy, All-Inclusive.

“If I have learned one thing from experience, it is this:

never underestimate how extraordinarily difficult it is

to understand a situation from another person's point of view.”

– Eleanor Catton

For industry leaders, the prospects to Amplify Impact present in many forms and languages. For those aspiring to empower their community’s Spanish speakers, please take Maria’s story to heart and reach out. To reiterate, what other non-English languages are prevalent in your locale? Let’s talk about it. You and those you seek to serve will be glad you did.
