Be Aware--Carbon Monoxide Can be Deadly
With cold weather approaching, the Farmington Valley Health District reminds residents of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO).   Carbon monoxide is a by-product of combustion. In the home, appliances including furnaces, water heaters, non-electric space heaters, poorly vented fire places or wood stoves can all be sources of carbon monoxide.  During the winter months, heating appliances are being used regularly and houses are closed up which can contribute to the build up of carbon monoxide especially if appliances are not working properly or are vented poorly.  Carbon monoxide is known as the "silent" killer because it is colorless, odorless, tasteless and non-irritating.  Annual maintenance of home heating systems, including furnaces, fireplaces, chimneys and other heat sources should be done annually.  CO detectors should be installed to alert residents of elevated levels of CO so residents can evacuate and seek help.

FVHD also warns against the improper use of portable generators and charcoal grills during power outages. Never use them inside the home! Unfortunately Connecticut experiences preventable carbon monoxide poisonings and deaths, often during the winter months and during power outages. CO exposure is the leading cause of death due to poisoning in the United States. However, CO deaths are entirely preventable.
It's Still Flu Season...
While the flu season got off to a relatively slow start, influenza activity is now widespread and increasing. The following everyday prevention strategies can help keep you and your family healthy this flu season:
  1. Wash hands often with soap and warm water or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water are not available;
  2. Keep hands and fingers away from face and out of the mouth;
  3. Avoid close contact with sick individuals;
  4. Avoid sharing cups and eating utensils;
  5. Eat healthy foods and get regular exercise.

If you are sick you can help stop the spread of illness by:
  1. Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or cough into the elbow;
  2. Stay home when you are sick

Everyone age 6 months or greater should get the flu shot every year. It is not too late to get the flu shot if you have not done so already!
NOW IS THE TIME !
TEST FOR RADON
Radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas released from rock, soil and water that contains uranium. Elevated levels of radon gas can accumulate in enclosed spaces. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer second only to cigarette smoke. Testing your home for radon is easy and if elevated levels are found, they can be reduced. For a limited time, FVHD is providing FREE radon test kits. They can be picked up at our office at 95 River Road in Canton.

FVHD Offers Mental Health First Aid Training
Mental Health First Aid USA is a live training program — like regular First Aid or CPR — designed to give people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The course uses role-playing and simulations to demonstrate how to recognize and respond to the warning signs of specific illnesses.
Mental Health First Aid teaches participants a five step action plan, ALGEE, to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in an emotional crisis: 
  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm 
  • Listen nonjudgmentally 
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

If you are interested in becoming trained in Mental Health First Aid, call the Farmington Valley Health District.
