Meet UTRGV MS1, Irum Rahman

The UTRGV School of Medicine is a practicing academic medical institution. What aspect of Academic Medicine impacts you the most? (Educational, clinical, research, etc.)

I am part of the AHEC Scholars Program, and through this experience have become interested in studying the unique socioeconomic aspects of health in the Rio Grande Valley. Additionally, I am interested in clinical research as I would like to improve health outcomes for patients in whichever specialty I choose.

Academic Medical Minute with: Alcides Amador, M.D.

Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist; Assistant Professor of Psychiatry; Psychiatry Clerkship Director;

TCHATT Medical Director

When did you join the UTRGV School of Medicine?

I joined the UTRGV School of Medicine in July 2020.

What brought you here?

What brought me to the UTRGV School of Medicine was the chance to return home and increase our area's access to mental health care, especially for children and adolescents. When my brother was diagnosed with Autism, my family had difficulty finding a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist in the RGV to help guide my brother's treatment. By returning to the RGV after completing my medical specialty training in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, I am helping increase our area's access to mental health care for Children & Adolescents.

What do you enjoy about working in Academic Medicine?

What I enjoy the most about working in Academic Medicine is providing our medical students and residents with the training to be the best physicians in the country.

Why is academic medicine important to our community?

Academic medicine is vital to our community because it provides the RGV with access to the most up-to-date medical treatments and decreases the need to travel outside the RGV to receive treatment. For example, growing up in the RGV, it was very common to hear stories of patients having to travel outside of the RGV to receive care, but now the RGV has more options to receive the most up-to-date treatments here.

How do you spend your free time?

In my free time, I play tennis with family and friends. I also enjoy listening to audiobooks.
