June 2019
Message from the Dean
As we close out another school year and prepare for a new class at the School of Medicine, I would like to congratulate all the students, residents, faculty and staff for their hard work in contributing to the successful year we have had.

Most recently, our student chapter of the Texas Medical Association was named Chapter of the Year and two of our students, Amanda Arreola and Sarah Miller, were appointed to the association’s Medical Student Section’s Executive Board. I am extremely proud of our students for their dedication in serving the community. Over the past year, the students spearheaded several community health events, including an immunization drive at our student-run clinic in Peñitas and bicycle helmet giveaways at local health fairs. They also offered CPR and wound care trainings throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Their work exemplifies the mission of the School of Medicine to engage with and provide excellent care to the communities we serve.

In addition, our faculty members continue to receive well-deserved accolades for their work at the School of Medicine and in the health care professions. Andrew Dentino, MD, vice dean for Academic Affairs, was recognized recently by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for his service as a member of the ACGME’s Review Committee. Adrian Sandoval, PharmD, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine, received the 2019 Outstanding Early Career Alumni Award from Texas A&M University for his significant contributions to the field of pharmacy.

Our School of Medicine is young, but we have made strides in fulfilling our mission to train a diverse group of physicians and biomedical scientists, engage the communities we serve and provide them excellent care and participate in research that advances the quality and accessibility of health care to the Valley and Beyond.

This year, we will continue that momentum. Our cancer immunology team joins us this month and our research enterprise continues to grow. I look forward to sharing with all of you our future achievements and am confident to say that the School of Medicine’s vision to become a leader in the creation of a diverse and representative workforce, the stimulation of biomedical innovation and the delivery of patient-centered care in the Valley is becoming a reality.

Kind Regards,

UTRGV School of Medicine holds 2nd Annual Family Medicine Research Symposium at KMC Conference Center
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine’s three Family Medicine residency programs had their second annual Family Medicine Research Symposium Friday, May 17, at the KMC Conference Center in Weslaco.

Medical residents from the School of Medicine’s three family medicine residency programs presented their quality improvement projects to a panel of physicians who critiqued and ranked their work. This event included the training programs at McAllen Medical Center, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, and Knapp Medical Center.

This year’s event also featured keynote speaker James W. Tysinger, Ph.D., Distinguished Teaching Professor who holds the Leonard G. Paul, MD Professorship in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

This symposium fulfills a requirement for residents who are completing their training and offers those who are still training an opportunity to showcase their work. Quality improvement projects are especially important because they allow the residents and the hospitals where they train an opportunity to apply evidence-based medicine to clinical decision-making that leads to better care for patients.

The symposium concluded with an awards ceremony.
