Project & Program Updates

THRIVE

THRIVE (Tribal Health Reaching Out InVolves Everyone) has undergone some big changes. Maleah Nore is pursuing a master’s degree in public health, while Aurora Martinez has stepped into the position of THRIVE Suicide Prevention Project Coordinator. Colbie Caughlan is still the THRIVE Project Coordinator and Jane Manthei is the new text messaging specialist. THRIVE has also gained multiple new employees, Shane Lopez-Johnston as the 988 Project Director, Helena Darrow as the Zero Suicide Initiative Project Manager, and Lisa DiBianco, as an Eval Specialist with the Board. We are excited about the team’s growth and wish Maleah all the best as she continues her education.

THRIVE has worked to continue the caring message campaigns, update the Mind4Health: concerning post-training, and has a new toolkit that will be released after the new year.

All three Caring Text Message interventions for AI/AN youth, college students, and Veterans, since their launch (through June 2023), 427 youth have signed up, 109 young adults have signed up for college caring messages, and 31 have signed up for the veteran’s caring messages with Nearly 100 new participants signed-up in 2023. The dissemination of the campaigns on social media from July 2022 – June 2023 had over 140,000 impressions and 1,773 profile views, depending on the social media platform. Staff also mailed out over 350 packages of over 90,000 print materials across Indian Country.

We are also very excited to announce that planning for the 2024 THRIVE Conference is beginning!

The Conference will be held at the Portland State University campus from June 24 - 28, 2024. Tribal youth ages 13-19 from the Pacific Northwest and beyond will build protective factors, connect with Indigenous peers and mentors, gain healthy coping mechanisms, and embrace their culture and identity, all while learning through art, service, and movement.

Conference registration opens in early April.

Registration is free; tribes from our service region (Washington, Oregon, and Idaho) will be prioritized in registration.

To receive updates about the conference or anything else going on with the THRIVE project, email THRIVE Project Coordinator Aurora Martinez at [email protected] to be added to the THRIVE Listserv.

Local Organizations Work to Support Queer Indigenous Youth |

Paths (re)Membered

This July, the Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board passed a resolution in support of gender-affirming medical care for Two Spirit and LGBTQ2S+ Indigenous youth.

December All-Staff Retreat

Moving words and stories from our guest speakers empowered NPAIHB staff as they began to reflect on all of the amazing work they have accomplished in 2023. NPAIHB staff convened in the Portland State University Game Room with their loved ones to play games and celebrate the upcoming holidays! Staff traded cookies, swapped white elephant gifts, played pool, bowled, and took portraits together with their family and friends. The 2023 NPAIHB staff retreat proved to be empowering and unifying for staff who do not get the opportunity to see their fellow team members on a regular basis.

New Faces

Shane Lopez-Johnston

Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation

THRIVE 988 Project Director

My name is Shane Lopez-Johnston, and I am an enrolled member of the Tolowa Dee-ni' Nation. I have worked for the Oregon Tribes and Urban Indian population for the last 20 years and am very excited to come back to the Board after 18 years of being away.

I have a lovely wife of almost ten years and twins that are 3 ½. I am a huge sports fan, including fantasy sports leagues. I love fishing, cooking and getting outdoors to camp and hike. Also, since we are in the holiday season, I will share that I have an obsession with watching Christmas movies (the good, the bad and the indifferent). So please share any diamonds in the rough (lol).

Maya Webber

Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi

Behavioral Health Community Specialist

Hello! My name is Maya and I am a descendent of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi. I was born and raised in Oregon and currently live in Eugene. I graduated with an MSW from Portland State University this past June.

I was very fortunate to intern with the Board during my last year of school, and I'm so grateful to be joining the team as a staff member. Most recently I worked with Kvco Consulting Services on projects related to NTOS 2023 and Every Day is Ceremony. Prior to going back to school, I worked for the Y of Greater Seattle in youth development and outdoor programs. I love gardening, cooking/baking, and pickling.
