A Spiritually Based Health Education Organization
April is National Minority Health Month
April is National Minority Health Month (NMHM), a time to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to affect people from racial and ethnic minority groups and encourage action through health education, early detection, and control of disease complications.

Celebrated every year in April, National Minority Health Month:

  • Builds awareness about the disproportionate burden of premature death and illness in people from racial and ethnic minority groups.

  • Encourages action through health education, early detection and control of disease complications.

The origin of National Minority Health Month is in the 1915 establishment of National Negro Health Week by Booker T. Washington. In 2002, National Minority Health Month received support from the U.S. Congress with a concurrent resolution (H. Con. Res. 388) that “a National Minority Health and Health Disparities Month should be established to promote educational efforts on the health problems currently facing minorities and other health disparity populations.” The resolution encouraged “all health organizations and Americans to conduct appropriate programs and activities to promote healthfulness in minority and other health disparity communities.”

Why are some genetic conditions more common in particular ethnic groups?

Some genetic disorders are more likely to occur among people who trace their ancestry to a particular geographic area. People in an ethnic group often share certain versions of their genes, which have been passed down from common ancestors. If one of these shared genes contains a disease-causing variant (also known as a mutation), a particular genetic disorder may be more frequently seen in the group.

What You Need to Know
It's National Poetry Month

National Poetry Month is a special occasion that celebrates poets’ integral role in our culture and that poetry matters. Over the years, it has become the largest literary celebration in the world, with tens of millions of readers, students, K–12 teachers, librarians, booksellers, literary events curators, publishers, families, and—of course—poets, marking poetry’s important place in our lives.

Poetry helps us to embrace and celebrate life's victories and adventures, but it also can help us to soothe our spirit, control our emotions, and heal from traumas. Jotting down the thoughts and feelings that are making us feel depressed may help us to relieve stress.

Suggestion: Take a walk in the fresh spring air and write a poem to share with friends and family.

In Praise of Bridges

© J. Joy “Sistah Joy” Matthews Alford

We honor bridges
And thank God for them
Created for such times as these
When firm footing is key
Allowing us to overcome obstacles
Avoid difficulties and disappointments

Each built and strengthened by ancestors
Elders, visionaries who predicted
Knew of our need

Together we build breath-taking
Awe-inspiring bridges
To carry our gifts
Even our burdens
As we lift
More than our fists
To strengthen both builder and traveler

Here is a poem that I wrote for you to think on, Where Is The Key?

Black Doll Making
In 2021-2022, Master Artist Gertie Loretta Hurley (Prince George's County) taught Black doll making to apprentice artist Shannon Jordan (Prince George's County) in a Folklife Apprenticeship. Community activities with the dolls included teaching children about healthy eating using coloring books and the "Healthy Me 123" game featuring the dolls developed by TEA. Word(s) for the Week:

Happy In The Lord
Happy are the people whose God is the Lord. Ps 144:15

To be happy is the goal of many. What is happiness? Is happiness a collection of things. What makes you happy? Is it the job you have been praying so long for? Is it the husband or wife you petitioned God for? Perhaps you already have a wonderful wife, husband, or companion who "makes you happy."
The Random House Dictionary of the English Language defines "happy" as; (1.) delighted, pleased or glad, as over a particular thing. As to be happy to see a person. (2.) characterized by or indicative of pleasure, contentment, or joy; a happy mood; a happy frame of mind.
We welcome your support. For more than 16 years Taking Effective Action, Inc. (TEA) has worked to improve health education and awareness to persons in the Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia communities and beyond. We are striving to help individuals and families live longer, healthier and more productive lives. Please partner with us by your in-kind or financial donation. We appreciate any help —no amount is too small $1.00, $5.00 and up.
