Human Science major Nadia Sadanandan (NHS’24), has been named a 2022 Goldwater Scholar. The prestigious national scholarship — given to students who excel in mathematics, engineering and the natural sciences — seeks to identify and support college sophomores and juniors who show exceptional promise of becoming the next generation of research leaders in these fields.

For patients who are not fluent in English, language barriers can cause miscommunication between a patient and the medical team, even when a third party interpreter is present. A graduate linguistics student is conducting intersectional research through the Medical Humanities Initiative to improve health care for immigrants by utilizing narrative medical practices.

Could fluctuations in body weight resulting from drastically cutting and increasing calories lead to physiological changes that raise the risk of heart disease or diabetes later in life? A new study in rats, led by Aline M. A. de Souza, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Medicine’s nephrology and hypertension division, offers potential insights into the long-term impacts of weight-loss diets, as well as involuntary reductions in food intake caused by food insecurity. The work was presented at the American Physiological Society's Experimental Biology 2022 meeting this weekend.
