In 2023, the School of Health launched the “Big Idea” initiative, a project inviting faculty to propose unconventional, interdisciplinary approaches to advance knowledge and/or test potential solutions to seemingly intractable problems. School of Health Dean Christopher King, PhD, MHSc, FACHE, announced the two proposals selected: the “Global Mental Health & Well-being Initiative” and the “Initiative on Health Economics, Financing and Outcome.”

According to the National Science Foundation, only 1.2% of doctoral degrees conferred annually go to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Megan Majocha (G’24), a PhD candidate in tumor biology who is deaf, hopes that increasing the accessibility of interpretation and transcription services will help future students struggling with the challenges she faced.

Anna Tate Riegel, PhD, has been appointed GUMC’s permanent vice president for biomedical education and research. Since agreeing to serve as interim vice president in November 2022, Riegel has been instrumental in advancing key operational aspects of research and graduate education and strengthening the link between the entities.
Riegel announced two appointments designed to further strengthen aspects of the biomedical research and education enterprise.

Bruce Luxon, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine, will serve as associate vice president for clinical research initiatives for GUMC. In this role, Luxon will oversee management of GUMC’s clinical research and develop broad-based clinical research initiatives to support the growth of the clinical research enterprise.

Formerly an interim role, the role of assistant vice president of master’s program administration & development for GUMC held by Caleb McKinney, PhD, MPS, has been made into a permanent position. McKinney will continue his work on expanding efforts to deliver a more comprehensive education and better career prospects for biomedical students in master’s and certificate programs.

King Selected to Join Leadership Greater Washington’s Signature Program |
Christopher J. King, PhD, MHSc, FACHE, dean of Georgetown University School of Health, has been selected to participate in Leadership Greater Washington’s Signature Program Class of 2024, a ten-month program with a diverse group of regional changemakers.

Two GUMC faculty members are participating in the CSJ Faculty Fellows Program. They are Shabab Wahid, PhD, assistant professor of global health in the School of Health, and Christina Marea, PhD, CNM, assistant professor of nursing in the School of Nursing.
