Ruesch Center Symposium Focuses on Early-Onset GI Cancer

With an emphasis on early-onset gastrointestinal cancer, the 14th Annual Ruesch Center Symposium brought together nearly 300 health care providers, researchers, advocates, patients and caregivers November 16-18 to honor those dedicated to curing GI cancers, discuss the experiences of patients and caregivers, and share the latest research in the field.

Georgetown Global Health Center Launches First Open-Access Wildlife Disease Database

Georgetown University Medical Center’s Center for Global Health Science and Security announced the launch of a first-of-its-kind wildlife disease database — a system for collecting records of viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, etc. — designed to suggest an early warning system for potential viral emergence. The Pathogen Harmonized Observatory, or PHAROS, is open to the global community and free to access.

Researchers Pinpoint Brain Area Where People Who Are Blind Recognize Faces Identified by Sound

Using a specialized device that translates images into sound, Georgetown University Medical Center neuroscientists and colleagues showed that people who are blind recognized basic faces using the part of the brain known as the fusiform face area, a region that is crucial for the processing of faces in sighted people. The findings appeared in PLOS ONE on November 22.

New Medical Center HR Director

Amri Rouson will start in her new role as director of human resources for Georgetown University Medical Center as of December 11. Rouson will oversee the delivery of HR services to the medical center community including staff members, AAPs, faculty, fellows and students.

Submit Nominations for the President’s Awards for Distinguished Scholar-Teachers

All members of the Georgetown community are invited to nominate exceptional full-time faculty members for the President’s Awards for Distinguished Scholar-Teachers. Awardees will each receive an annual grant of $10,000 for three years to support their scholarship. Nominations are due by December 4. Announcing the 2023-24 Equity Forward Faculty Workshop Schedule

Centered around the theme “Equity in Assessment,” the 2023-24 Equity Forward faculty workshop series covers fundamental principles for faculty, fellows, residents and staff on the basics and core values around creating equitable and inclusive learning environments. The workshops can be joined at any time and participants who complete four or more will receive a certificate of completion on Teaching for Equity and Inclusion. CME credit will also be offered.
