Could a Georgetown Lab Finding Lead to New Treatment in Pancreatic Cancer?

In the past decade, immunotherapy has offered breakthrough therapies for many cancers that had previously been considered difficult to treat, yet pancreatic cancer has eluded its promise so far. Now, for the first time, new research by Georgetown scientists shows potential to make immunotherapy effective in pancreatic cancer by combining it with another drug.

HRSA Honors Richards with MCHB Directors Award

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) has given the 2023 MCHB Directors Award to John Richards, research professor and executive director of the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH), based at GUMC. Presented January 26, the award is given annually to selected individuals who have made noteworthy national-level contributions to the health of infants, mothers, adolescents and children, including children with special health care needs. The NCEMCH provides national leadership to the maternal and child health community in three key areas - systems-wide program development, education and state-of-the-art knowledge - to improve the health and well-being of the nation’s children and families.

Mandelblatt Receives NCI Outstanding Investigator Award

Jeanne Mandelblatt, MD, MPH, director of the Georgetown Lombardi Institute for Cancer and Aging and professor of oncology at the School of Medicine, received an NCI Outstanding Investigator Award for 2023. The award supports accomplished leaders in cancer research who are providing significant contributions toward understanding cancer and developing applications that may lead to a breakthrough in biomedical, behavioral or clinical cancer research. It provides up to $600,000 in direct costs per year for seven years, allowing substantial time for funded investigators to take greater risks and be more adventurous in their research.

The Georgetown-Howard Center for Medical Humanities and Health Justice (MHHJ) invites applications for its inaugural graduate student fellowship on the 2024-25 theme of “lore." The fellowship is an opportunity for individuals with an interest in effective evidence-based teaching or public engagement at the intersection of humanities and health equity. Pilot Funding Opportunity: Center for Neuroengineering

Building on the success of last year’s pilot funding program, the Center for Neuroengineering (CNE) is requesting applications for the 2024 Pilot Funding Program to further grow the neuroengineering community at Georgetown and foster collaborations with CNE partners. There are two budget categories, $25,000 and $50,000, and the deadline for applications is April 1 with funding to start on July 1. Please email neuroengineering@georgetown.edu with questions or to obtain informal feedback regarding the fit of specific project ideas.

The GUMC Staff Community Award honors colleagues who show positivity, perseverance and resilience in their work, and go above and beyond on behalf of our community. Nominations may be submitted by students, staff, administrators or faculty members, and the awardees will be chosen by the GUMC/Staff AAP Caucus Committee and select others. 


Up to two awardees will be selected each quarter to receive a $1,250 cash award. Learn more about the award and submit nominations here by 5:00 p.m. on February 16.

Lauinger Library to Monitor Occupancy

To help develop plans to renovate and improve Lauinger Library, Georgetown University will use privacy-friendly occupancy monitoring sensors to determine how busy spaces are in real time. The sensors detect Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals from electronic devices and do not collect personally identifiable information. To opt out of participating, turn off your Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals before entering Lauinger Library and keep them off while you are in the building. Georgetown continues its commitment to understanding the prevalence of sexual misconduct on our campus and enhancing awareness of prevention and response resources within the community. This ongoing dedication is reflected in our third participation in the Higher Education Sexual Misconduct and Awareness (HESMA) survey alongside peer institutions following our initiatives in 2016 and 2019.


All degree-seeking students based in Washington, DC, including those currently studying abroad, will receive an individualized link that ensures confidentiality. Please look for emails from Westat to access the survey between February 1 and March 15.
