How a Medical Student’s Tragedy Drove a New Law to Increase Fire Safety in Apartment Buildings

After his fiancee died in an apartment fire in Maryland, Michael Sobalvarro (C’16, M’27) spent the next year advocating for increased fire safety protections in apartment buildings to prevent future loss of life. His work paid off.  This month, a new law took effect in Maryland –  the Melanie Nicholle Diaz Fire Safety Act.

Addressing Cancer Screening Behaviors in the Muslim Community in Washington

An important study has revealed crucial insights into the cancer screening behaviors of Muslims in the Washington, D.C., area, highlighting the influence of cultural and religious beliefs on health practices. The study was led by Aisha Choudhri, MPH, community health educator at the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Prevention and was published in the Journal of Cancer Education.

Case Study Reveals Important New Details About Rare Second Cancers Related to CAR-T Therapy

A new, detailed analysis of a patient’s second cancer after receiving CAR-T therapy for the initial cancer provides rare but important insights intended to offer helpful guidance for oncologists and pathologists about the clinical presentation and pathologic features involved in a CAR-T related second cancer. Metin Ozdemirli, MD, PhD, professor of pathology at Georgetown University School of Medicine and director of the Hematopathology and Hematology Laboratories at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, and colleagues from Georgetown Lombardi published the analysis in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Nurse Educators Selected for Health Equity Influencers Program

Health Equity Influencers Program Heather M. Bradford PhD and Debora Dole PhD and Mara G. Evans DNP

Three School of Nursing educators were selected to join the 2024-25 cohort of the Health Equity Influencers Program at Mercy University School of Nursing: Debora Dole, PhD, professor of nursing and vice dean for academic and faculty affairs, Mara G. Evans, DNP, assistant professor and Heather M. Bradford, PhD, instructor. The program is an intensive residency designed to strengthen nursing faculty’s preparedness to educate the newest generation of nurses through the lens of health equity.

West Road Closed June 17-20

On Monday, June 17 through Thursday, June 20, both lanes of West Road will be closed between North Road and the Yates parking lot, which can still be accessed by Reservoir Road. Pedestrian walkways will accessible and can be viewed on the campus map. During this time, those that park in the Southwest Quad Garage will enter and exit campus via the Canal Road entrance. Those that park in the Hariri or Leavey Center garages will enter and exit campus via Entrance 4 on Reservoir Road. Please allow yourself additional travel time as these closures are in effect.

Accelerating Research Translation Grant: LOI Due July 18

Georgetown will apply to the National Science Foundation (NSF) for an Accelerating Research Translation grant. If awarded, the grant would support a number of Seed Translational Research Projects with up to $150,000 per project over two years. If you have a proven innovation ready to move to the translational stage that you would like to be considered for inclusion in the NSF grant application, please submit a Letter of Intent before 5:00 p.m. on July 18 to the Office of Technology Commercialization using this form. More details on our internal process are available here.  

Deadline Extended: Apply for Toulmin Pilot Project Funding by July 1

The Vice President for Biomedical Graduate Education and Research requests applications from full-time research faculty at GUMC designed to target innovative multidisciplinary biomedical research that will lead to grant funding submission in the next fiscal year. Awards will be made under the Toulmin Pilot Projects. Read the RFP here and apply here by 5:00 p.m. on July 1.
