Tunisian-German Couple in Court over ‘Ricin Attack Plot’ ( The Daily Star ) A Tunisian man and his German wife went on trial Friday, charged with planning a foiled biological bomb attack in Germany with the deadly poison ricin. Sief Allah H., 30, and his wife Yasmin, 43, were arrested a year ago by an anti-terrorist squad that found 84 milligrams of the toxin in their Cologne apartment. Go to article
The Next Zika Virus Outbreak Will Affect Young Women of Reproductive Age Disproportionately: Mathematical Modeling Study ( bioRxiv ) The duration of immunity to ZIKV remains unclear. Nowcasting by Bayesian Smoothing: A Flexible, Generalizable Model for Real-time Epidemic Tracking ( bioRxiv ) Delays in case reporting are common to disease surveillance systems, making it difficult to track diseases in real-time. “Nowcast” approaches attempt to estimate the complete case counts for a given reporting date, using a time series of case reports that is known to be incomplete due to reporting delays. Direct RNA Nanopore Sequencing of Full-length Coron-avirus Genomes Provides Novel Insights into Structural Variants and Enables Modification Analysis ( bioRxiv ) Sequence analyses of RNA virus genomes remain challenging due to the exceptional genetic plasticity of these viruses. Because of high mutation and recombination rates, genome replication by viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerases leads to populations of closely related viruses that are generally referred to as ‘quasispecies’.
