Greetings!
As we are enjoying the not-so-lazy days of summer we wanted to say that there is a lot happening in the world of health and patient advocacy:

First, we congratulate Krista Hughes, CEO of Passion for Patients who was recently named to the National Advisory Council (NAC) for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). It is a three year appointment, made by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Xavier Beccera. You can see the press release here.

Second, we have been pleased to support and work with our health and patient advocate organizational peer leaders in the Coalition for Health Care Advocacy Organizations (CHCAO) joint working group. Members from Greater National Advocates, National Association of Health Care Advocates and the Patient Advocate Certification Board have been meeting regularly to work on tackling leadership opportunities to support the field of advocacy. We hope to have more news soon about what that can mean for you!

And last, but not least, many of our members have been asking us about when ICOPA Meeting recordings will be posted and available from the Spring Conference. We are working diligently on the recordings, the recording quality of which did not meet our typical standards for delivering live or on-demand content. We hope to provide the recordings in the best shape possible – thank you for your patience as we work through some of the glitches we have experienced.

Have a safe and happy summer and we hope you will participate in one or more of our great programs in August!

Here’s to your good health,

Robin Shapiro (Board Chair) and the Team at HealthAdvocateX

Community Conversation - August 2022
When: August 8th, 2022 | 11am – 12pm (PT)
Where: Online via Zoom (Register Here)
Cost: FREE!
In this Community Conversation, we will hear an update on COVID-19 and then explore the topic of Neurodiversity. A central premise of the neurodiversity movement is that variations in neurological development and functioning across humans are a natural and valuable part of human variation and therefore not necessarily pathological (e.g., Jaarsma and Welin, 2012; Kapp, 2020) The goal of neurodiversity rights advocates is to expand our definition of what is viewed as normal and acceptable rather than attempting to alter those behaviors as a matter of course.
We will explore why it is important for advocates to understand what neurodiversity means and how to advocate effectively for people who may think differently.
