Nursing Home Residents and COVID-19: A Call to Action
| |
Nursing home residents continue to be disproportionately affected by COVID-19, with confirmed cases at 1.4 per 1,000 residents. Yet, as of May 12, 2024, only 29% of these residents are up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccines.
To better protect older adults, the CDC now recommends an additional updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccine dose for those aged 65 and older. This dose should be administered at least four months after the previous one to enhance protection against severe illness.

CDC Confirms Second Human H5 Bird Flu Case
The CDC has confirmed a second human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5) in the U.S. As with the case in Texas, the individual is a worker on a dairy farm where H5N1 virus has been identified in cows. This recent case, identified in Michigan, involves a farm worker who tested positive through an eye swab after experiencing conjunctivitis symptoms. The CDC maintains that the risk to the general public remains low but stresses the importance of precautions for those in close contact with infected animals. Providers should ensure workers avoid unprotected exposure to sick animals, animal waste, and unpasteurized milk.
The CDC has implemented enhanced surveillance and updated safety recommendations, including the provision of personal protective equipment (PPE) for farmworkers. For more details, visit the CDC Avian Flu Summary.
