Meningococcal Vaccines: Recommendations and Considerations for Adults

Q: What meningococcal vaccines are recommended for adults?

A: The CDC recommends the MenACWY vaccine for adults with certain medical conditions or increased risk factors, such as complement deficiencies, complement inhibitor use, asplenia, HIV, microbiologists exposed to Neisseria meningitidis (N. meningitidis), travel to high-risk areas, or during outbreaks. The MenB vaccine is also recommended for adults in those same high-risk groups.

Q: Who might not be able to get meningococcal vaccines?

A: Individuals who have had a life-threatening allergic reaction to a previous dose or severe allergy to vaccine components should not receive that particular meningococcal vaccine. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should discuss risks and benefits with their doctor before getting MenB or MenABCWY vaccines. Those with moderate to severe illness should wait until recovered.
