Shot of Knowledge: Vaccine Q&A

Q: How long is a vaccine viable if stored in a refrigerator in a syringe?

A: Disposable syringes are meant for administration of vaccines, not for storage. The CDC recommends that any provider-drawn vaccines in syringes must be discarded at the end of the clinic day if unused.

Manufacturer-filled syringes are different - they can be kept and used until their expiration date, but only if:

  • The needle guard remains intact
  • No needle has been attached

Since manufacturer-filled syringes don't contain preservatives against microorganisms, once the sterile seal is broken, the vaccine must be used or discarded by the end of the workday.

Q: For vaccine expiration dates showing month/year, when exactly does the vaccine expire?

A: The vaccine remains viable through the last day of the month indicated on the expiration date. After that date, it must not be used. Regular monitoring of vaccine supply is recommended to prevent expiration.
