  5 Ways to Improve Your Health in 2014

  • Get at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. Exercise can benefit your physical and mental health in many ways. It is best to mix flexibility, cardio, and weight bearing exercise and increase your daily regimen to 60 minutes.
  • Drink more water. We live in a hot and dry climate and most of us do not drink enough water. Drink between half your body weight in ounces and 128 ounces per day. When outside or exercising be sure to drink closer to the upper limit. It is also good to add electrolytes to your filtered water. I recommend Trace Minerals.
  • Shop organic.  Buy as many organic foods that are available and affordable. It is import to always buy organic meats and dairy, apples, cherries, bell peppers, peaches, nectarines, cucumbers, raspberries, strawberries, spinach, grapes, pears and celery.
  • Get your sleep. Optimal health and happiness are dependent on the healing that takes place with proper sleep. Aim for 8 hours per night. If you have sleep issues address them- we can help.
  • Eat more vegetables. I cannot say this enough; vegetables are the key to healthy living. Aim for 50-80% of each meal to be vegetables and include all colors of the rainbow and be sure to try cultured vegetables. For more information click here.

Know your numbers.

Keep a personal copy of your labs:
  • Blood Pressure level
  • Cholesterol- HDL/LDL and Triglycerides 
  • Vitamin D (yes, even here in the desert)
  • Hours of sleep each night

Remember to choose foods low on glycemic index. All sugars (including fruit juice and diet drinks) promote inflammation which increases your risk of developing cardiovascular problems regardless of your age or level of activity.

Tips to Stick to your Resolutions

            It's already the middle of January, have your New Year's resolutions gone out the window? It's easy to lose track of our resolutions and goals for the new year, but the following are a few tips to help achieve those goals and build on them throughout the year.

            Writing goals down-have clear, specific goals and a plan of action on how to achieve them. Writing them down makes them more concrete and you can look back and track your progress mid-year. Luckily there are so many health and fitness apps that can help track your goals.

            Keep it simple-choose one or two personal or professional goals to focus on. You can add more as you check accomplished goals off your list.

            Help others-making a positive impact in someone else's life also makes a positive impact in your own life.

            Meditation-probably one of the most important, but most neglected is daily meditation. Just twenty minutes of quiet, deep breathing a day can reduce stress, decrease negative thoughts, improve mood and digestion, as well as slow your heart rate. Another benefit of slowing down to just breathe is being able to enjoy the simple pleasures in life which may appear at any given moment.

            Make small, positive changes every day- add a serving of fruit or vegetable as a mid-day snack, try a new type of exercise or allow yourself 15 minutes of good stretching post workout. Smile or hold the door open for a stranger. These little changes can add up and make sticking to your resolutions easier.
