Healthy Eating for Older Adults

Nutrition plays an important role in our health as we age. However, new health diagnoses and the general accessibility of food make it difficult to ensure proper nutrition. The Administration for Community Living reports that almost 50 percent of older Americans are malnourished. Read on for tips to promote healthy eating for older adults and help fight senior malnutrition.

Nutrition Programs not only help seniors receive the nutrients they need to live healthy lives, they also support older adults who want to live independently as they age.

Nutrition Program

Aging & In-Home Services (AIHS) offers a nutrition program to address problems of food insecurity, promote socialization and promote the health and well-being of older adults through nutrition and nutrition related services.

AIHS offers three avenues of support to address the nutritional needs of older adults and people with disabilities:

Meals on Wheels

Homebound individuals receive meals delivered to their doorstep. Depending on a client's needs, they may receive diabetic-friendly or low sodium meals to ensure they are receiving their recommended nutrients. All meals are reviewed by a registered dietitian and meet the minimum recommended dietary allowances for older adults.

Congregate Dining

Individuals who receive this service are able to safely meet at a designated location daily Monday-Friday to receive a hot lunch and enjoy socialization amongst their peers. Each person's meals are individualized to their unique dietary requirements. This program promotes nutrition while reducing senior isolation.

Restaurant Vouchers

Individuals who receive restaurant vouchers are able to drive safely. Clients are provided vouchers that act as payment for a meal at one of the approved restaurants throughout northeast Indiana. Vouchers act as nutritional and social support, but also familiarize individuals with the rest of our services should they need them in the future.

Each of these programs has its own set of eligibility requirements. If you are interested in learning more, visit our website or Just Call Us for more information.

AIHS in the News

Aging & In-Home Services received $1,000,000 in grant funding from USAging as part of a nationwide initiative called the Aging & Disability Vaccination Collaborative (ADVC).

The ADVC initiative seeks to improve lower-than-normal influenza rates among older adults that were observed in 2022. The grant funding allows for vaccination clinics to provide multiple offerings such as Influenza, COVID, Shingles and Pneumonia vaccines.

AIHS is currently seeking partners to host vaccination clinics and collaborate on this project. These partners will receive funding from AIHS via the ADVC grant. For more information or to submit interest in partnering, contact mclouse@agingihs.org.
