April 2024

National Public Health Week and

STI Awareness Month

The month of April is STI Awareness Month marking April 10th as National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD).

The first week of April is also National Public Health Week. Tribes have been protecting the health of their land, water, air, and people since time immemorial. Using cultural teachings to hunt and prepare Indigenous foods, using traditional plants as medicines, hosting talking circles to support mental health -- protecting Mother Earth, one another, and ourselves are all core aspects of public health.

New Tribal Public Health Pathways Resource Guide

The Northwest Portland Area Indian Health Board has developed a new career pathway resource guide. The Tribal Public Health Pathways Resource Guide features diverse learning opportunities for AI/AN middle school, high school, college and graduate students who are interested in health or public health careers.

Teachers, counselors, parents, students, or other caring adults will find diverse opportunities in the Pacific Northwest, West, or across the U.S.

The guide includes a brief description of each program, as well as dates, locations, and links to apply. The guide is available on the Healthy Native Youth Resource Library

Healthy Native Youth is a part of the movement to inspire and connect students on their pathway into diverse public health careers. This month’s issue contains curricula, tools, and Resources to Inspire.

Implementation Toolbox: Assess Student Learning

Providing Native youth with sexual health education and knowing where they start their learning journey is important when teaching. It is equally important to know what they learned and how they utilize their gained knowledge. The Implementation Toolbox has pre- and post- surveys to assess student learning that can be adapted for your teaching effort.
