It’s summer time and it is heating up across Indian Country & in Alaska! In June, the 10th Annual Virtual THRIVE Youth Conference 2021 happened! Native youth (ages 13-19 years old) came together for presentations & workshops about social justice, mental health, and art! Participants explored their creativity and passions for health & wellness through cultural identity as prevention. It was fire!
The month of July issue focuses on Culture as Prevention in programming. To be effective, health and wellness interventions must reflect the cultural values, social contexts, and health epistemologies of Native teens and young adults.

We R Native Teacher’s Guide
|

Get your students actively involved in their own health and wellbeing! The 10-session guide offers fun, interactive lessons for using We R Native’s multimedia health resources with students 13-18 years old. Activities incorporate connection to culture as a protective factor, while covering vital information about suicide prevention, mental health, sexual health, dating and relationships, drug and alcohol use, and bullying. The curriculum is free, no training is required and you can download a copy here.

Native youth (ages 13-19 years old) was held virtually in June and the transformation of participants who attended daily presentations and workshops about social justice, mental health, and art was awe-inspiring! The workshops youth attended allowed them to explore their creativity and passions for health & wellness through cultural identity as prevention!

Native It’s Your Game 2.0
|

A much-needed modernization effort is nearly completed for the Native It’s Your Game (NIYG) middle school sexual health online curriculum. The ease of an HTML/JavaScript platform will be much easier for students to utilize and for educators to implement! Updated and colorful NIYG Factsheets have also been created. An effort to have the curricula on a USB thumb drive is also in the works!

The Minority Sex Report (MSR) is a Native and Black led space for people of color to have conversations about sexuality, whose mission is to provide representation in sexuality education. MSR hopes to increase sexual knowledge and awareness through education, community collaborations, national presentations, and advocacy by addressing barriers to achieving optimal sexual health for communities of color, as well as intersectional inequalities faced by our communities.

Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson named ANTHC President
|
|
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) Board of Directors named Valerie Nurr’araaluk Davidson as President, removing interim from the title, effective Monday, June 14.
Davidson is Yup’ik and an enrolled Tribal citizen of the Orutsararmiut Traditional Native Council. In 2018, she became the first Alaska Native woman to serve as Alaska’s Lieutenant Governor, after previously serving as Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Health & Social Services. In that role, her visionary leadership and ability to manage difficult dialogues, diverse leaders and expansive teams prepared her for this new chapter in her career.
Davidson previously served at ANTHC as Senior Director of Legal and Intergovernmental Affairs and represented Alaska Native communities and their health needs at federal, state, and community levels. Through her education and commitment to Native peoples and the state of Alaska, she has advanced a collective and holistic approach to self-governance and the well-being of all Alaskans.

Learn prevention strategies, screening, diagnosing, treatment and management of hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Tribal health care providers, case managers, pharmacists and others interested are invited to join. The ECHO series is held virtually the second Tuesday of each month from noon - 1 p.m. The upcoming session on Tuesday, July 13 focuses on Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP).
