National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The month of March includes observances for HPV, LGBTQ+ health and National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. While it can be difficult to discuss, sex and sexuality are important aspects of our health and wellbeing. Native VOICES is one HNY curriculum that affirms youth in their identity and provides valuable information that resonates with them, their families and their communities, learning together.    This month’s HNY issue includes news about Project Red Talon’s National Network, HIV-related stand-alone lessons & handouts, and upcoming CoP events to bring awareness towards ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indian Country and Alaska. We also have news about a new resource coming in July!

Project Red Talon's National Network

The Project Red Talon National Network is committed to ending the HIV epidemic and promoting sexual health in Indian Country & Alaska. Network Partners’ aim to make healthcare more equitable and accessible to AI/AN teens & young adults, IDUs, and 2SLGBT individuals - by offering positive, affirming, strength-based programs - designed to combat fear, negative stigma and inaccurate information about HIV/STI testing.

Home-based HIV Testing: I Want The Kit & Text Native Test

At-home HIV test kits are free, easy to use, and a convenient way to know one’s HIV status without stepping foot into a clinic or health center. Text NATIVE TEST to 55251 To get a rapid HIV self-test mailed to you for FREE! Also, if you live in Alaska, HIV self-test kits are available for free to any mailing address in AK too! Visit ANTHC (for Alaska residents) or SPTHB and JHU (for test kits nationwide). View the SPTHB map to help expand the PRT effort towards ending the HIV epidemic for Indian Country & Alaska!

Event Planning Opportunity: March 20th

National Native HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NNHAAD) is held on the first day of Spring. It was initiated in 2007 and has been successful in promoting and educating Native people about HIV and AIDS. On this day, we encourage all Native communities to plan events to promote HIV testing and continue education of HIV/AIDS.
