October 2024
Healthy Relationships & Kindness
|
“Life has its struggles, but when we come together as community, life is good.”
The month of October spotlights Bullying Prevention and Domestic Violence Awareness. Two very important adolescent health topics that the Healthy Native Youth collective consistently hears about from educators, youth, and caring adults.
| |
The monthly newsletter will feature the BRAVE intervention, a community needs assessment tool, and youth support resources for the school, community, and family environments.

BRAVE Curriculum for High School & Young Adults
Topics Covered: Substance Misuse, Violence and Bullying Prevention
| |
|
The multi-media BRAVE intervention was designed for American Indian and Alaska Native teens and young adults to amplify and reinforce healthy social norms and cultural values, teach suicide warning signs, prepare youth to initiate difficult conversations with peers and trusted adults, encourage youth to access mental health resources (i.e. tribal clinics, chat lines), de-stigmatize mental health services, and connect youth to trusted adults.
The video and text message series discuss important adolescent health topics, including: Healthy Relationships, Native Pride, Help Seeking Skills, Domestic Violence, Substance Misuse and Suicidality.
The curriculum is free to download, no formal training required, and three flexible options to implement to fit your setting.

Implementation Toolbox: Gather Phase Template
Community Needs and Resource Assessment
| |
The Implementation Toolbox – Gather Phase has a ready-to-use template to identify stakeholders and health priorities, and to emerge with community partner supports to help your local programming.
The goal of a community needs assessment is to understand:
- What youth, their families, and the broader community want to see in youth programming.
- What resources you have available to your program.
- What constraints or challenges may need to be addressed.
Bring together key partners to build community for and with youth!

Text Message Campaign of the Month: BRAVE
For Youth & Young Adults: Build resilience and help-seeking skills
| |
|
The BRAVE intervention builds on traditional teaching strategies and community values, and connects AI/AN teens and young adults to people, stories, resources, and teachings that demonstrate what it means to be strong and resilient.
BRAVE SMS users have reported improvements in mental health, reductions in alcohol & drug misuse, improvements in resilience and coping skills, and better self-esteem.
Educator Challenge: Encourage youth to sign up for support!

Bullying Prevention Month
|
Bullying Prevention Resources
Stand Alone Lesson, Activity, and Handout for All Ages
| |
October is Bullying Prevention Month. It is important for youth to understand their connection to others and to value that connection by not bullying. It is also important to understand what bullying is, what is looks like, the harm it can cause, and to have youth support resources on-hand to know where to get help.
Tip: Share these resources with the appropriate audience in your school, community, and families.
