The Healthy Pima Indicators are a set of measurable health-related areas that, when focused on collectively, can improve health in Pima County. Tracking these important areas helps diverse groups and organizations work together to make our community healthier and support overall well-being.
The Pima County Health Department is tracking 11 indicators grouped into 4 categories. In each newsletter, we will highlight one indicator and share examples of the work we are doing to support improvements toward achieving optimal health outcomes in that area.
| | | Sexually Transmitted Infections | | Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis can affect anyone who has sex. If untreated, these infections can cause serious health problems, including infertility, lifelong illness, and even death. The good news is STIs are preventable and treatable. Using barrier protection (like condoms), getting tested regularly, and treating infections early can stop the spread. | | Behind every STI statistic is someone’s health, story, and chance to prevent long‑term effects of illness. Pima County Clinical Staff Recognized for Syphilis Efforts
Arizona Public Media showcased how Pima County Health Department teams are tackling rising syphilis cases. Early testing and treatment can prevent severe and lifelong harm to newborns. PCHD provides safe, confidential, no‑cost or low‑cost testing and treatment—both in clinics and through community outreach—to ensure people get care when and where they need it.

Syphilis is Complicated, ADHS Can Help
In April, PCHD hosted a Lunch & Learn with Rebecca Scranton, (Deputy Bureau Chief, Arizona Department of Health Services) highlighting the complexity of diagnosing and treating syphilis. Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP)
The 2025-2027 Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) is proceeding smoothly, with more than 50 community partners participating in the CHIP Steering Committee and Priority Area meetings.
These meetings bring partners together to collaborate on strategies in three key areas: Behavioral Health, Access to Care, and Roadway Safety. All meetings are open to the public, and dates, times, and Microsoft Teams links are listed below. For questions, contact Caroline Lewis.

Promoting Heart Health at the Southern Arizona Heart Walk
Pima County employees turned out for the 2026 Southern Arizona Heart Walk on April 18 at Reid Park, joining thousands in support of heart‑health awareness, CPR training, and lifesaving research.
The event featured 5K and one‑mile routes, and the Pima County Health Department once again teamed up with community partners in a friendly fundraising competition.
Thank you to everyone who walked, donated, or helped spread the word about heart health.
