BRFSS Data Collection Begins
Starting February 13, 2026, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) launched its 2026 questionnaire that is used to better understand the health of Arizona communities. Pima County residents may receive a call inviting them to take part in a confidential, voluntary interview about general health, lifestyle behaviors, and chronic conditions. The BRFSS survey is the largest annual, national telephone-based health survey and has been in use since 1984. The confidential information is used to help guide future health priorities and initiatives. Your participation helps shape programs and policies that improve health across the state—thank you for making a difference!

The Healthy Pima Indicators are a set of measurable health-related areas that, when focused on collectively, can improve health in Pima County. Tracking these important areas helps diverse groups and organizations work together to make our community healthier and support overall well-being.
The Pima County Health Department is tracking 11 indicators grouped into 4 categories. In each newsletter, we will highlight one indicator and share examples of the work we are doing to support improvements toward achieving optimal health outcomes in that area.

Food insecurity is a key indicator of a community’s health. The USDA defines it as limited or uncertain access to nutritious, adequate food. Poverty and unemployment are major contributors, and a survey from the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) shows that one in four Americans worries about having enough money for food in the next year.
Food insecurity is linked to serious health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, and depression—making it an important public health priority.
