Victoria was recognized for being a great mom and overcoming a number of challenges. Currently Victoria is working part-time and pursuing her GED and Colton is enrolled in a medical daycare and continues to show progress.

DON'T BE SORRY.  STAY SAFE.
Infant mortality (IM) is the death of an infant before his or her first birthday. While not all infant deaths can be prevented, some can. The prenatal screening form assesses for risk factors that have been shown to cause preterm birth or low birth weight, a leading cause of IM.

Healthy Start and other home visiting services are designed to address risk factors for healthier birth outcomes. These services also include education to address SIDS and promote safe sleep practices.

INFANT DEATHS DECLINE IN ORANGE COUNTY

The infant mortality rate for Orange County has decreased 15% from 7.2 in 2017 to 6.1 in 2018. Although 2015's rate of 5.2 is the lowest rate within the last decade, the 2018 rate is the lowest in the last three years. The Orange County infant mortality rate is only 1.6% higher than the 2018 Florida rate of 6 percent.

The infant mortality is the death of babies under 1 year of age and is expressed as the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births. The infant mortality rate is generally considered to reflect the health and well-being of a population, including women of reproductive age and their infants, as well as the quality of the health care available. Infant mortality information is used by local governments and organizations to identify areas in need and designate available resources.

HEALTHY START STATEWIDE UPDATE

The Florida Association of Healthy Start Coalitions (FAHSC) and the Florida Department of Health (DOH) worked together over the last five years to strengthen components of the statewide program based on the latest maternal and child health and home visiting research. The refined model also incorporates activities to address the social determinants of health, such as housing and economic self-sufficiency. In addition to DOH support, the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA), provides major program funding under a state Medicaid waiver. Local Healthy Start Coalitions will work with managed care organizations to coordinate services for women insured by Medicaid during their pregnancies. The Florida Healthy Start program has contributed to demonstrable improvements in birth outcomes since 1991, including a 35% decrease in infant mortality. The impact of the strengthened Healthy Start model will be monitored through program outcome and performance evaluation.

Postpartum depression is more than just the "baby blues". Know the signs and seek professional help as necessary.
HS MOTHERS & BABIES CURRICULUM
Helping Moms With Postpartum Depression Through Evidence-Based Intervention

Healthy Start uses the Mothers & Babies (M&B) Curriculum - an evidence-based, postpartum depression prevention intervention - to assist in identifying the signs of a distressed mom. Face-to-face sessions are conducted regularly with no more than two weeks between sessions. Within 12 brief sessions, the curriculum promotes healthy mood management, teaches pregnant women and new moms to effectively respond to stress by increasing thoughts and behaviors that lead to positive moods. M&B participants showed greater decrease in depressive symptoms and were less likely to move from mild to severe depression than non-participants.
