New U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Final Rule Prohibits Health Care Discrimination against People with Disabilities

A new HHS final rule that recently went into effect on July 8th updates Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 in prohibiting discrimination based on a person's disability in healthcare settings.

The Rehabilitation Act prohibits this discrimination in programs run by federal agencies, programs receiving federal financial assistance, or in federal employment/among federal contractors. These updates offer consistency with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in barring discrimination against people with disabilities.

Highlights of the rule include:

  • People with disabilities should not be denied medical treatment due to bias or stereotypes
  • Accessible medical diagnostic equipment is made available
  • Websites and mobile applications are also accessible for people with disabilities

NJ Register Ready

NJ Register Ready helps people with disabilities to register their special needs with their county office of emergency management. NJ residents with special needs are encouraged to complete the online registration annually. This information is used by emergency planners for their disaster preparedness planning so that if a disaster occurs, the county has properly prepared to meet their needs.

NJ 211 specialists can help explain the registry, the enrollment process, and answer any questions individuals may have. It's best for the individual or a designated representative to complete the online registration, however, if someone needs help registering, NJ 211 specialists can complete and submit the registration on their behalf.

NJ Legislative Disability Caucus

Access to Dental Care

Since 2020, the New Jersey Legislative Disability Caucus has served as a bipartisan forum within the New Jersey Legislature for lawmakers and their staff to consider the impact on the disability community when shaping all public policies in the Garden State through increased awareness and a greater understanding of the complexities of the disabilities service system and issues affecting individuals with disabilities and their families. People with disabilities, their families, and organizations that serve, support, and advocate for people with disabilities in New Jersey act as a resource to the Caucus, providing education and programming as needed.

This webinar begins at 12:00pm on Tuesday, July 23rd.
