Founder's Message

Dr. Florence Jameson

Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada is and continues to be, an inspiration and a pipeline for the next generation of medical professionals whether they are physicians, nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacist, medical assistance etc.

There is nothing more inspiring to someone who is seeking to find their purpose, than to be surrounded by dedicated, competent, and passionate mentors who are providing compassionate care for those who are sick and struggling to survive. Now that we have added social and behavioral health services and dental services, our volunteers also include dentists, hygienists, social workers, and therapists. With each new program, our family of caregivers continues to grow.

See below for our volunteer story of the month highlighting Marianne Sampson. Marianne is a hygienist, instructor, and community service coordinator at Nevada State College, and helps coordinate volunteer dental students our new dental program. With strong volunteer leaders like Marianne, we can ensure that the students from our educational affiliates receive the best hands-on training available.

VMSN continues to expand and build on its educational community outreach opportunities for individuals who are seeking to serve in the medical field in Nevada. Residents of the UNSOM family practice, internal medicine and pediatric programs, as well as the Nellis AFB family practice program volunteer with VMSN. In addition, we provided graduate education for medical students from UNSOM, Touro, and other programs.  Nursing students and MAs from Roseman University, Touro Univesity, CSN, UNLV, and Pima, as well as students from the Roseman School of Pharmacy all received hands on training and experience  in our new Ruffin Family Clinic.

Thank you to the students, faculty and administration for all these amazing programs and for your compassionate collaboration to serve our community!

Patient Story
Jacob Kane & Nurse Karen Holien
Ruffin Family Clinic, 2016

Jacob was up for a promotion at work. Life seemed to be rolling right along. Then he passed out on the job. As he came to, his peers recognized the episode as diabetic induced and sent him to the hospital. Having no insurance, Mr. Kane began to seek out medical coverage. First the State of Nevada, then the welfare department for Medicaid, followed by Clark County Services. They all denied him.

We are so proud of our many partnerships within the Las Vegas community. Currently the Roseman University School of Pharmacy has implemented an educational program that greatly benefits our patients as well as, provides their students with very beneficial patient interactions.

Each patient receives an hour long review of their medications. Details of when and how to take their prescriptions are provided so that the patient is obtaining the best possible outcome. Even dietary needs and restrictions are outlined.

Our patients are empowered by this program and thus better able to understand their prescription therapy.
Volunteer Highlight

Marianne Sampson

Marianne is a VMSN volunteer as well as the Community Outreach Coordinator for the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). In addition, she is a dental hygienist instructor at CSN. She is mindful of instilling volunteerism in the next generation of dental students. As CSN students volunteer with VMSN's new dental program they will gain valuable hands-on patient experience as well as receive college credit towards graduation.

"Many people don't realize that there is a big connection between oral health and overall health. Part of our dental philosophy is prevention. If we can prevent a person from incurring pain or tooth loss, they will be healthier overall and thus a more productive citizen."
