New Year, Healthier You: Quit Smoking and Vaping in 2025

Contributor: Manitoba Tobacco Reduction Alliance (MANTRA)

In Manitoba, more people are taking steps to quit smoking and vaping, and the numbers are inspiring. As of 2022, 14.1% of Manitobans smoke, down from 25.7% over two decades ago. Most people who have ever smoked have successfully quit, and nearly half of those who still smoke have tried to quit. Quitting is possible, and resources are available to help you become part of this positve trend.

If you’re thinking about quiting, 2025 could be your year! You don’t have to do it alone. Manitoba offers a wide range of free tools and programs, whether you prefer in-person, virtual, or group support. Find the option that’s best for you and take your first step today.

Learn Why the Alzheimer Society is, 'Your Path Forward'

Contributor: Samantha Holland, First Link Regional Team Lead for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba

This January, during National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba aims to help Manitobans better understand dementia and the resources available to those navigating the disease through their campaign, “Your Path Forward.”

Hearing the words, “you have dementia” can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate your next steps alone. When you connect with the Alzheimer Society, their caring staff of experts will listen to your experience and welcome you into a community of support.

Throughout the month, the Society will share personal stories and insights from individuals living with dementia and care partners, like Gary Elbers, who felt lost after his wife Brenda was diagnosed.

“I was so overwhelmed – I didn't know anything about dementia,” says Elbers. “Connecting with the Alzheimer Society was our lifesaver. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of uncertainty and they threw me a lifeline, giving me hope when I felt utterly lost.”

Gary learned and grew his skills as a care partner with the help of the Society and Brenda continues to live at home with his support. Watch the youtube video online to see Gary’s story.

“No matter where you are on your dementia journey, the Alzheimer Society is here to offer you guidance and connect you with the right resources to fit your unique needs,” says Erin Crawford, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba CEO. “We want everyone to know that whether you’re worried about brain health, experiencing signs of dementia, adjusting to a diagnosis, facing the later progression of the disease or looking for help as a care partner, the Society is here for you and will help you figure out your next steps.

More than 20,300 Manitobans live with dementia today – a number expected to reach 39,100 by 2050. The Alzheimer Society is a place for families to turn at any point while navigating cognitive changes or dementia – and the Society’s First Link® Client Support program offers resources including one-to-one counselling, support groups, education sessions and dementia-friendly programs.

Budget Friendly Recipe of the Month:

Stuffed Bell Peppers

Contributors: Dana Mandryk, Nursing Student with the Home for the Summer Program; Caroline Le Clair, Registered Dietitian and Certified Chef and is Community Wellness Faclitator with the Interlake-Eastern RHA

Our theme for 2025 is “Staff & Community Favourites!” Thank you to Dana Mandryk, Public Health summer nursing student, for submitting this month’s recipe! “Being a nursing student, I am very busy during the school year. Being able to plan my lunches ahead of time makes my life so much easier and keeps me organized!”

Bell peppers are one of the many vegetables that can be consumed year-round. They are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and also contain a wide array of antioxidants. They also may have several health benefits, such as reducing inflammation, improved eye health, and reduced risk of several chronic diseases including anemia.
