Espi found out that she had hepatitis B when she was 64. For some time, she was monitored every six months, but eventually a doctor told her she could die if she didn’t begin treatment.
Instead of automatically taking his advice, she researched her options. She also kept active, ate well and tried not to worry. Finding a support group helped her decide on her own terms to take medication when she had all the information she needed.

The authors paint a positive picture about progress toward a cure, echoing the conclusion of many experts who in recent years have said that no single medication, along, is likely to provide a cure for hepatitis B, that a combination will be required..
They say that significant advances have been made recently toward the development of a finite treatment for the disease, which would lead to elimination of HBV as a public health threat. But the authors say the cure for HBV will probably come as a combinations of drugs with different mechanisms of action that work synergistically. Ideally, the combination therapy would reduce replication of the virus, restore HBV-specific immune function and counter virological resistance.
The article offers a clearly readable table of the current main drug classes that researchers are studying. The authors also present a list of five strategic directions that are specific and challenging.
