Heart Health Special Issue!

View as Webpage

Dear Steve,

DID YOU KNOW that if your cholesterol is too low, it could impact your ability to form memories?

A new study from EMBO Journal reminds us that the brain is the body's fattiest organ, with lipids making up 60% of its weight. Cholesterol and fatty acids are the building blocks of lipids. Researchers found that subjects whose memories were impaired had saturated free fatty acid levels that were significantly lower compared to subjects with normal levels.

We have always said that saturated fat is necessary for us to function optimally. However, we must consume it in amounts that meet our individual needs.

When one is taking too much cholesterol-lowering medication (statins), lipids are kept artificially low. Memory loss, which is a side effect of statins, is often related to your cholesterol being too low. If your LDL cholesterol is below 40, you should speak with your physician about reducing your medication dosage.

Support your immune system with our Free Prevent and Fight Infection 2.0 Protocol here.

Warning: Counterfeit, Adulterated Supplements Online

On the internet, especially at Amazon, there is an epidemic of counterfeit, adulterated, and purposely mislabeled dietary supplements. In September 2023, a man was arrested for selling counterfeit Pure Encapsulations products. A study from JAMA Network Open found that half of immune products analyzed from Amazon had labels that did not match the contents. The FDA sent a warning letter to Amazon in late December 2023.

Heart Health Update

Steve: When it comes to new, valuable blood tests, they usually take at least 5-10 years to become routine. Don't wait. Have these conversations with your internist and cardiologist now if heart health is a issue. If they won't order them, you can always do them through us.

Of course, the following is only relevant if you have exhausted all diet and lifestyle changes while working with us.

Better Cardiac Screening

According to the authors of a new study in Science, "It is clear that there is more going on than just what statins can control. More therapies are needed, and to get them we need to know more about other sources of risk for heart disease, especially heart attacks and strokes."

Of course, this starts with focusing more on heart inflammation, which is 50 percent of cardiac risk. This is why the FDA just approved a low dose gout drug called Colchicine to reduce high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels.

Here are other cardiac tests beyond your standard lipid panel that should be included in routine screening, especially if medication is being considered:

  • Lipoprotein (a) - Lp(a) particles carry the greatest overall risk for coronary heart disease on a per-particle basis, with about six times the atherogenic risk of LDL, according to a study in Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Moreover, a study from JAMA Cardiology suggests high levels of Lp(a) were tied to a higher risk of major cardiovascular events, regardless of hs-CRP levels.

  • Apolipoproteins (APOs) - APOA1, APOB, and APOA all provide relevant risk assessment for cardiac disease, as reported in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

  • LDL Particle Size and Type - small or large LDL? A or B type? These are highly relevant markers to better assess your cardiac risk.

Better Cholesterol Medication

There are several cholesterol medications that are just as effective as statins with less side effects. The more you mention these to your physicians, the more they will be prescribed, and the more prices will come down.

  • According to a study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, bempedoic acid reduces LDL cholesterol, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, and risk of cardiovascular events.

  • Another study from The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology found excellent 12-week LDL cholesterol lowering efficacy and good patient tolerance of an oral PCSK9 inhibitor, similar to the injectable form of PCSK9.
