Chinese Medicine and High Blood Pressure

jogging-women.jpg

High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects 76.4 million in the United States. If left untreated, it can cause damage to the heart and coronary arteries, stroke, kidney disease, vision loss, erectile dysfunction, memory loss, fluid in the lungs, angina, and peripheral artery disease.  Risks associated with hypertension include:  age, heredity, gender (male), overweight or obesity, smoking, high cholesterol, diabetes, and physical inactivity.

Both Chinese and Allopathic medicine agree that lifestyle changes are very important. Dietary changes including the reduction of sodium, getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, avoiding tobacco smoke, and limiting intake of alcohol are recommended.  In addition, Chinese medicine also recommends avoiding MSG, baking soda, meat, fat, aged foods, diet soft drinks, preservatives, sugar substitutes, meat tenderizers, spicy foods, and soy sauce. Over the counter medications that contain ibuprofen should also be avoided.

There are nine different subcategories of hypertension in Chinese medicine and each are treated uniquely utilizing acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Included in these subcategories are the common overstressed type with red face, anger and insomnia; a pattern that is specific to perimenopausal hypertension in women; one associated with the hardening and inflammation of arteries; and another associated with the elderly.

Depending on the stage and presentation of hypertension Chinese medicine can be used alone or in conjunction with Allopathic medicine for treatment. Catherine Travis treats many forms of hypertension with success and Dana Price specializes in hypertension during pregnancy.
