A Note from the CEO

Dear Friends,

Have you heard the news about our recent merger? Ronald McDonald House Houston and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston officially merged to become Ronald McDonald House Charities Greater Houston! We are very excited about the potential to help even more families and hope you will support us in our expanded mission. To learn more, visit our new website at www.RMHCHouston.org.

February is Heart Month, and we raise awareness and celebrate the Heart & Soul of the House with our cardiac patients like Baby Adalee and her family. Read about her brave heart in this month's newsletter. Speaking of hearts, I would also like to extend my deepest gratitude for the generous hearts that support our organization. Our donors, board members, sponsors, volunteers and staff helped us make a tremendous impact in 2023 - we couldn't have done it without all of you.

With gratitude,

Cristina Vetrano

2023 by the Numbers

Thanks to the generous support of individuals, organizations, foundations and corporations, we made an incredible impact in 2023. Here are just some of the things we accomplished together!

Adalee's Brave Heart

Twenty weeks into her pregnancy, Loreann and Ramiro learned that their unborn daughter had a heart condition; HLHS (Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome) with heterotaxy. The doctors explained that their baby’s heart was flipped backwards, and she only had 1 chamber instead of 4.

After little Adalee was born on July 17 in San Antonio, she was immediately flown to the Texas Children’s Cardiac ICU in the Texas Medical Center. Loreann and Ramiro, along with their two other children Arlette and Juero, arrived at the Ronald McDonald House on Holcombe Boulevard at 3 in the morning.

The very next day Adalee underwent the first of several surgeries to repair her heart. That grueling time was a blur for Loreann. “You’d wake up in the morning, spend all day at the hospital with her, then come back to sleep and shower. Then do it all over again, every day,” she recalls. “It was hard.”

Adalee was hospitalized in recovery for more than a month before being discharged to prepare for her next surgery. The family remained at Holcombe House while doctors monitored Adalee and prepared her for a second surgery in December.

“Even though it was a very difficult time, it was a blessing to be able to stay here,” says Ramiro. “Everyone from the volunteers to the staff to the cleaning crew were so kind and supportive.”

Loreann, Ramiro and their children spent the summer, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Christmas and New Years at Holcombe House. It was their home away from home and it allowed them to stay close to Adalee’s lifesaving medical treatments. Finally, in late January 2024, Adalee was ready to go home to San Antonio for the very first time.

“I feel like we are stronger as a family,” says Ramiro. “Being here kept us together so we could support each other.”

Your donation makes it possible for families like Adalee's to stay together during times of medical crisis.

Nanci Allen Retires

Nanci Allen's career with Ronald McDonald House started the day Holcombe House opened its doors in 1997. Seeing the need for parents to have a refuge inside the hospitals, she played a key role in building our programs at TCH, CMHH and MDA. We wouldn't be where we are today without her tireless dedication. After 26 years as an integral part of our organization, Nanci announced her retirement for early 2024. We all wish Nanci the best in this new chapter of her life!

Meet Leeticia Thomas- 2023 Employee of the Year

We are so excited to introduce our 2023 Employee of the Year, Leeticia Thomas. Leeticia is the weekend House manager and embodies our core value of excellence. She adapts to every Ronald McDonald House location where she wholeheartedly supports families and patients. Over the years, we have witnessed her strength, compassion, integrity and commitment. Thank you Leeticia!

Volunteer Spotlight - A Letter from Sherry

I started at RMH/TCH in 2001, after my teenaged son broke his neck in Vermont at summer camp and spent a month in a Burlington hospital. The RMH there took such good care of us that when we got home to Houston, I called Holcombe and asked if they had an in-hospital house. I wanted to pay it forward.

I was the first volunteer trained at TCH. Through the years, I brought family, friends, co-workers and my students to understand the RMH mission, and to cook meals, host holiday parties, make cards, distribute gifts, crochet caps and blankets, collect pop tabs and so much more.

I’ve met so many families, scared and unsure like I had been in Burlington so long ago. I’ve watched parents from so many countries, languages and backgrounds all carrying the same burden. The best thing about the House, in my opinion, is that parents get to talk to each other and encourage one another.

We volunteers are there to listen, and I have been honored to simply listen, for nearly a quarter of a century. I've listened as a dad told me about his dying baby daughter. I've listened as a young mother told me about getting to take her baby son home the next day. No other volunteer endeavor I’ve undertaken has lasted as long or been as rewarding.

I will forever be grateful for the opportunity RMH/TCH provided me to live outside myself and to pay kindness forward. I will always remember the love and support the Burlington house gave me so long ago. (My son, by the way, is now 38 years old, healthy, with three daughters.)

Walk in joy.

RMHC Around Town

Chevron Houston Marathon

On January 14, sixteen athletes Ran for a Reason with RMHC Greater Houston as the charity of their choice and raised over $10,000. It was a chilly morning, but our volunteers showed up along with the Big Red Shoe Car to cheer on the runners and hand out snacks. Run for us in 2025!

Moments of Joy

After the excitement of the holidays, the House was noticeably quieter in January. Families enjoyed crafts, classical music and even some karaoke.
