September E-News
A new look for Heartland!
In the past two weeks, the entrance to Heartland has been completely transformed! Anyone who has visited the barn has experienced our bumpy driveway and makeshift parking lot that turned into a muddy mess whenever it rained.

These problems are now a thing of the past, thanks to:  Jeff Parisi (Parisi Construction Company), Terry McGowan (IUOE 139), Ken Bork, Bob Cayer and Mike Burt (all from WOE Training Center), Melissa Huston (Schrock Trucking LLC), Brooks TractorJim Schumacher (JP Cullen & Sons), Payne & Dolan, and Yahara Materials. These kind and generous individuals and businesses donated their time, labor and equipment to give us a beautiful new driveway and parking lot. We are so thrilled, and so very thankful, for this  gift!
Looking for fall fun? Save the date for these two upcoming events!

October 22: Join us at the beautiful Robinia Courtyard on East Washington Avenue in Madison for Heartland's fall fundraiser, Clucks in the Courtyard! Enjoy delicious appetizers, have a beer, glass of wine (or a "pigtail"!) and hang out with Heartland's friendly farm animal friends. We'll also have live music, a silent art auction, and Badger fans can catch the game in the all-new Black Locust Cafe. Kids are welcome. Tickets on sale NOW!

November 19:  On Saturday, November 19th, Heartland will host its annual Thanksgiving FOR the Turkeys! Join us as we celebrate Thanksgiving in a whole new way -- by feeding the turkeys a holiday feast of their own! After the turkeys (and ducks and chickens!) gobble up the food, take a barn tour and meet the rest of our farm animal friends!
Say hello to Billy Zoom and Crocus!

This summer we said goodbye to one of our beloved roosters, Thunder, who passed away after a brief illness. He was a gentle giant and best pal to our tiniest rooster, Fonzie. Fonzie has always enjoyed the company of other roosters (which isn't too common!) so we introduced him to Billy Zoom and Crocus, who were staying at another shelter. After a brief "getting to know you" period, the three guys have bonded and seem to get closer each day. We will never forget our Thunder, but we're happy to see Fonzie making new friends.

Fall Campers keeping busy with barn chores, crafts, games and more!

Our Fall campers have been keeping the barn lively on Saturdays! In the morning, the campers assist the barn staff and volunteers with morning animal care and barn chores (a camper favorite!) and after lunch, it's all about nature hikes, games, crafts and other activities.

Pictured are the campers practicing mindfulness by making meditation jars, inspired by the book, Moody Cow Meditates by Kerry Lee MacLean. Some of our staff have made them, too! It's a great project no matter how old you are.
Heartland thanks you!
September Volunteer of the Month: Jennifer Agmon
Meet Jennifer, our September Volunteer of the Month! Jennifer spent her summer at Heartland as an assistant camp counselor. Jennifer is a high school senior who lives in California, and she knew she wanted to do something special with her summer. She did some research online and found Heartland. She applied for the volunteer assistant camp counselor position, and then flew to Wisconsin to spend her summer with us, the summer campers, and the animals. Now that's passion and dedication! We hope to see Jennifer back at the barn soon! Read more...
Thank you, Jerry and Nancy!
Meet our September "Good Eggs": Jerry and Nancy Tollefson! Jerry and Nancy got involved with Heartland after their daughter, Laura, started as an animal care volunteer. They've since been involved with several different projects around the farm - everything from plowing and tilling the two HFS gardens (a serious lifesaver!), to sewing winter coats for the goats, to installing a new duck pond. We are so thankful for these two and everything they do for Heartland. They bring such joy to the barn!
Love working with animals?
Do you love animals and enjoy working outside in a challenging and fun environment? Heartland needs animal care volunteers for Tuesday and Friday mornings! You must be available to volunteer one shift a week (3 hours) and commit to working at least 6 months. You will make the best friends of your life at the Heartland barn! Please  visit our volunteer page to apply.
Do you shop Amazon? Who doesn't?
If you love shopping Amazon, be sure to check out Heartland's wishlist ! It's one of the easiest ways to support Heartland and have much-needed supplies for our barn and office delivered right to our door. Another easy and excellent way to help Heartland is to shop AmazonSmile and select HFS as your charity. Amazon will then donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to us!  Learn more...
