As we kick-off 2017, we want to express our thanks to all of the "Big Hearts" who have done so much to support gastric cancer research. From researchers who are making promising new discoveries to folks like Stacy Millich, who once again held a successful "Guts and Butts" fundraiser to pay tribute to her beloved late husband, John Gyselbrecht, to individuals creating FirstGiving Fundraiser Pages to honor loved ones and encourage support for research. Not to mention, all the folks like you who made our year-end giving more successful than ever! Thank you!

As we approach Valentine's Day, we will be highlighting more people working tirelessly to create a future without gastric cancer. We also invite you to share your "Big Hearts" and your stories of people who have a made difference in our crusade against stomach cancer.

For the first time, researchers have grown a working stomach using stem cells that can be used to better understand gastric cancer and treatment options. Get a behind the scenes look at the project that's been ongoing since 2010.

A recent Dove Medical Press study found the combination of curcumin and 5-FU inhibited gastric cancer growth and induction of potent apoptosis in resistant cancer cells, and should be further studied as a potential treatment.

How are heart burn medications and gastric cancer related? Researchers found patients taking proton pump inhibitors for longer periods are at higher risk of developing fundic gland polyps on the stomach lining, which depending on the size can carry a risk of gastric cancer.

Anyone for Golf?

After our November event, several people came forward with ideas to help make-up the research funding gap for gastric cancer that receives less than one-half (.04%) of one percent of federal cancer research funding.

A Bay Area golfer would like to host a golf tournament and reception in Northern California this year. If you might be interested in helping coordinate or participate, send us an email. We would like to make this a fun outing for friends and golf enthusiasts who can also help support research funding for gastric cancer .
