The National Weather Service (NWS) continues to warn of a Winter Storm Warning for Saline County, with 6 to 8+ inches of snow expected overnight into Wednesday. Snow is expected to begin this evening, becoming heavy at times, especially during Wednesday morning. Wind gusts of 25-30 mph may cause drifting snow, further complicating road conditions.
Residents should prepare for considerable disruptions to daily life, dangerous driving conditions, and widespread closures and delays.
“Road crews are prepared to begin operations early Wednesday morning. Our motor graders will start around 4:30-5:00 a.m., followed by salt and plow trucks around 5:30 a.m.," said Saline County Road and Bridge Administrator Darren Fishel. "Crews will work throughout the day until around 5:30-6:00 p.m., then repeat the process as needed until roads are clear. However, blowing and drifting snow could impact progress."
Saline County Road and Bridge crews will continue working in shifts to clear roads as conditions allow.
Snow Removal Priorities & Public Assistance
Saline County’s Road and Bridge Department is responsible for clearing roads outside the Salina city limits. The department prioritizes paved roads first, followed by gravel roads, and then all other roads. Plowing will begin only when at least two inches of snow have accumulated, and snowfall is still ongoing. In icy conditions, crews may spot-treat paved roads as needed. During heavy snowfall or blizzard conditions, snow removal operations may pause until it is safe for crews to resume.
Residents can assist snow removal efforts by:
- Driving only if necessary to reduce road congestion.
- Parking off roadways to allow snow removal equipment to pass.
- Avoiding obstructing or stopping snowplows.
Residents can use the Saline County Snow Paths portal to check which roads have been cleared, which provides real-time updates on plow locations and road conditions.
