A Message from our President
Dear Aviator Family and Friends,

On behalf of the entire Helix family, I once again wish you a Happy New Year. I am so excited about 2021. This year, Helix will bring to Baton Rouge two innovative new schools: Helix Aviation Academy and Helix Legal Academy. Helix Aviation Academy is literally one of a kind. It will be the only K-12 aviation school in the country actually located on an airport. We are grateful for our partnership with the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport and the leadership of Airport Director Michael Edwards and Assistant Airport Director Gregory Pierson.

Our construction company is only a few short weeks away from completing the renovations of our new school building. We have added new classrooms to complement our 10,000 square foot hangar. Many have asked how much is the tuition. I am proud to say that we do not charge tuition at Helix Aviation Academy, and it is free to all students. Similar schools around the country are private schools, but we are a tuition-free public school. How exciting!

Founding Principal Charita Sellers is doing a wonderful job preparing for the upcoming year. We are looking forward to teaching your children about the limitless world of aviation and cyber technology. With our strong focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), our new 6th grade students will enjoy a world-class education in a nurturing environment.

Come Fly With Us” at Helix Aviation Academy!

Sincerely,

Preston J. Castille, Jr.
President, Helix Community Schools

Boeing Global Services)
Joan Robinson-Berry retired as vice president and chief engineer for Boeing Global Services in June 2020. Her accomplishments are numerous in the field of aerospace during her 33-year career that has broken barriers and elevated the industry. Joan’s trailblazing began early – she was the first African American from her childhood neighborhood to graduate from college with an engineering degree. Joan was the first female engineering graduate at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, and the first African American program manager at McDonnell Douglas. At the Boeing Company, she was the first African American on the Boeing Engineering Process Council, the first Boeing Fellow to the African Scientific Institute, and the first African American vice president on the Shared Services Leadership Team. Helix Aviation Academy Partners
We, here at Helix Aviation, would like to take the time to pause and give thanks to our partners in education that are working in conjunction with our team to make our school one of greatness for our incoming 6th graders for the upcoming 2021 - 2022 school year.
Curriculum Spotlight:
Foundation of Helix Aviation Academy Math Vision
For students to have access to college and career opportunities and choices in their future lives, they must be able to make sense of the world through a mathematical lens. Therefore, learning mathematics requires conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application of real-world problems. A student will develop mastery and expertise in a number of mathematical practices that have long-standing importance in mathematics education.

In our middle school mathematics program at Helix Aviation Academy, our vision is set by what we will see in our scholars. We are building a program in which we will see the mathematical practices come to life through the shifts (focus, coherence, rigor) called for by the standards. We will continue to refine the components of and resources for the program, on our path to see these practices and shifts embodied by our students.

Newton’s second law explains how much force is needed to cause an object to move faster—to accelerate. According to this law, an object’s acceleration (a) is proportional to the sum of all forces (F) exerted on it.

Mathematically, you can write this law in two ways: Force = mass x acceleration, or F = ma or Acceleration = Force/mass, or a = F/m.
If you think about an aircraft, this formula implies that a heavy plane with a small engine would need a long runway because it would take a long time for it to reach takeoff speed. In fact, if you know the weight of a plane and how fast you would have to accelerate to reach takeoff speed on a runway of a particular length, you could use Newton’s formula to calculate exactly how powerful the engine would have to be to supply enough pushing force to accelerate for takeoff.

Return to School Safety
"Return Safely"
As children return for the second part of the 20 - 21 school year, it is essential that schools do everything they can to protect k-12 staff from covid 19.

9 Habits of Successful Flight Students
“We help students develop habits at Helix Aviation Academy”
A number of factors may contribute to a student pilot’s success—a great instructor, support from a flight school, a stretch of good weather conducive to frequent flights. But you can take the reins of your flight training and tackle challenges faster by adopting habits that set you up for success.
