Students at Helix Mentorship Academy have a better idea about what college life is really like after participating in recent college tours sponsored by the school. "I enjoyed hearing about the student's personal experiences in college and what it's like to live in the dormitories," said Ronald Williams, a senior at Mentorship. "I am grateful that I got a chance to experience what college life is like outside of Louisiana and explore a different culture outside of my comfort zone," said Myneshia Allen, also a senior. "I learned about ways I can immerse myself into the college experience to the fullest," said Juanita Williams, a sophomore. As part of the tour, the seniors visited Lamar University, University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Houston Christian University. The juniors visited Grambling State University and Louisiana Tech University and the sophomores went to Tulane University. "The tours give students a firsthand account of what options are available to them as far as degrees and the various programs,” said Cecile Morgan, a math and dual enrollment teacher at Mentorship who has been organizing the tour for the past two years. “It's an eye-opening experience for many." The students went on a walking tour of the campuses visiting dining halls, dorms, athletics facilities and other key areas and met with current students. They also received important information about financial aid and the application process. Next up, the freshmen will be visiting Southern University and LSU in September.
